Harvard Downed by Visiting Minnesota
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The tone of the game was set early as
the two teams combined for four goals in the first five minutes as
the Harvard women’s hockey team (5-4-0, 5-2-0 ECAC) dropped a
7-3 decision to No. 2 Minnesota (14-2-0, 8-2-0 WCHA) Sunday
afternoon at Bright Hockey Center.
Minnesota opened the scoring 1:46 into the first period with a goal
from Rachael Bona with assists from Meghan Lorence and Emily West.
The Golden Gophers continued the offensive pressure, netting their
second goal less than a minute later as Kelly Terry beat Laura
Bellamy to make the score 2-0.
Harvard didn’t wait long to respond, as Jillian Dempsey
centered a pass to Gina McDonald who blasted a one-timer past Noora
Raty two minutes later, making the score 2-1. Minnesota got back on
the score sheet on the power play as Kelly Terry scored her second
of the game with assists from Sarah Davis and Rachel Ramsey. Terry
struck again at the 13:25 mark of the first with assists from Mira
Jalosuo and West putting the score to 4-1. The Crimson broke
through again late in the opening period on the power play as
Dempsey buried a shot in a wide open net off a Josephine Pucci
centering pass.
In the second, Minnesota added to its lead on a goal from Jen
Schoullis with assists from Amanda Kessel and Sarah Erickson making
it 5-2. Harvard cut into the lead once again scoring its second
power play goal of the game as Sarah Edney took a pass from Marissa
Gedman and beat Raty below the faceoff circle cutting the deficit
to 5-3.
Minnesota would add two more goals in the third period with goals
from Ramsey and West, sealing the 7-3 victory for the visiting
Golden Gophers.
Harvard was outshot 25-18 during the contest with Bellamy logging
18 saves to Raty’s 15. Pucci, Gedman and Dempsey recorded two
points each in the loss while Minnesota’s Kelly Terry netted
a hat trick in the first period.
Harvard is back in action Wednesday in its second midweek matchup
in a seven day span. The Crimson will look to exact revenge against
Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H., in a 7 p.m. showdown.
