Bears Topped by No. 4 Boston College
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Playing their fourth-straight
nonconfrerence game and fourth-straight Hockey East opponent on
Sunday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium, the Brown women's hockey
team was topped by No. 4 Boston College, 3-1. BC (10-4-1) got two
first period goals before Brown (3-3-5) got on the board in the
second, but Bruno could not overcome the impressive penalty kill
unit of the Eagles.
Even though the Bears were skating with an injury depleted roster,
Brown stayed right with the No. 4 team in the nation for the first
10 minutes of the contest.
The scoreless tie would not last however as at 12:52 BC's Caitlin
Walsh took the pass from Danielle Welch and was able to put it in
for her second goal of the season, and a 1-0 Eagle lead.
Brown was in position to tie it up at 16:03 in the first as a pile
up in front of the net led to a free puck in front of a defenseless
goal. The chance proved to unwarranted as an interference call on
the play led to a BC power play and another Boston College goal.
The power play score was put in by Alex Carpenter 17 seconds into
the advantage.
Brown its first power play opportunity at 18:52 in the first, and
even though they were not able to get on the board in the initial
period, they would go on to start the second with 52 seconds on the
advantage.
On the power play to start the second, the Bears got a couple good
looks, but could not convert against the BC defense.
Brown picked up another 5-on-4 opportunity at 1:32 into the period
on a tripping call. 56 seconds into the power play, junior Alena
Polenska (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) ripped a laser to the top
shelf to bring the Bears to within one. Senior co-captain Katelyn
Landry (Belmont, Mass.) set up the scoring chance and was credited
with her team-leading ninth point of the season.
Boston College got the goal back at 9:07 in the second, when Jackie
Young went high to score unassisted and put the Eagles up 3-1.
The two teams traded power play opportunities in the second half of
the second frame, but neither squads' penalty kill units would not
relent.
The first 10 minutes of the final regulation played out much as the
first 10 of the initial frame, with both teams skating equally
well. Brown got a power play late at 10:51 on a body-checking call,
but BC's kill stood up.
Another penalty on the Eagles kept Brown up a player up, and then a
1:17 in, Boston College picked up a hooking call to the Bears on a
5-on-3 with just under six minutes to play.
Again it was the BC penalty kill that shown through, keeping Brown
off the board.
Junior goaltender Katie Jamieson (Waterloo, Ontario) was solid in
net for the Bears, making 34 saves.
Brown will be back in action next weekend at home on December 2, at
7 p.m., against Quinnipiac, before facing Princeton on December 3,
at 3 p.m., as both the men's and women's programs will take part in
a doubleheader, celebrating the 50th anniversary of George V.
Meehan Auditorium.
