ITHACA, N.Y. – No. 3 Cornell completed a weekend sweep of No. 5 Boston University, dominating the Terriers with a 7-1 victory on Saturday evening that left no doubt about which team was superior.

The Big Red got five points (two goals, three assists) from freshman Jillian Saulnier, three defensemen got in on the scoring action and Amanda Mazzotta was near perfect in net for the second consecutive day in making 20 saves on 21 shots faced.

Cornell (9-1), after losing to Boston University (9-6-1) in the NCAA Semifinals last season, sent the Terriers packing with three goals each in the second and third periods.

Senior Amanda Young scored the first goal of the second period on a nice back-and-forth with Saulnier. Crossing the blue line, Young passed to Saulnier, who got a shot off. The rebound from Terriers netminder Kerrin Sperry bounced back to Young, who chipped in her first goal of the year and fifth of her career in her 100th career game.

Saulnier got the next goal herself, taking the puck into the zone after it was chipped to her by Catherine White. Saulnier was tripped on her path toward the net, but she still managed to shoot the puck past Sperry to give Cornell a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore defenseman Hayleigh Cudmore scored the final goal of the period on the power play, taking a slap shot from the blue line that had eyes and made it all the way past Sperry untouched.

Just 12 seconds into the third period, the Big Red made it a 5-0 game when White notched her seventh goal of the year. On a stellar series of passes from Saulnier and Luara Fortino, White had an open net and finished with ease. That goal chased Sperry from the contest, and backup Braly Hiller took her place for the final 19 minutes and change.

But Hiller's presence didn't matter to Cornell, which scored two more goals. Brianne Jenner got her first of the game and sixth of the year with assists by Monika Leck and Jessica Campbell, and Saulnier capped her night with an unassisted goal after stealing the puck in the neutral zone.

Cornell's power play once again got it going in the first period, as Fortino got her first goal of the season. Passing the puck from right to left, Rebecca Johnston found Brianne Jenner, who made a pass looking for Fortino right in front. The puck deflected off a stick, causing Terriers goalie Kerrin Sperry to be out of position for Fortino's shot into an open net.

True to form, Cornell converted on two power plays and knocked Boston University's penalty kill – which was No. 1 in the country before Friday – down to No. 7.


The Big Red remains undefeated against ranked opposition this season (3-0) and is now 3-0 in out-of-conference games and without a loss in non-Ivy League contests (4-0). Cornell has now scored at least three goals in every game this year, extending its three-goal-streak to start the year at a school-record 10 games.

The team has also scored in 29 of its 30 periods this season, with the opening 20 minutes at Princeton being the only period without a Big Red goal. Cornell has also outshot all 10 of its opponents this year and held a 26-21 advantage on Saturday.

Coach Doug Derraugh earned his 98th win on Saturday, and he could reach 100 when the team travels to No. 7 Mercyhurst for a two-game set on Friday and Saturday of next week.
