Bobcats Roll Past Durham Jr. Lightning In Exhibition Matchup

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team saw six different skaters find the back of the net, as the Bobcats rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Durham Jr. Lightning squad in an exhibition contest at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center on Saturday evening. Junior Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) netted two goals and an assist, while freshman Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) contributed a goal and two assists in the victory.
 
The Bobcats got on the board with two late first period goals by junior Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, Manitoba) and sophomore Amanda Colin (Burnsville, Minn.). Frykas’ goal, scored with just under four minutes to play in the frame, was assisted by sophomore Olivia Brackett (Coopersville, Michigan) and Kosta. Colins’ tally was assisted by Lyons, scored with just under two and a half minutes remaining, to make the score 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
 
Quinnipiac extended its lead to 5-0 with three goals in the second stanza, receiving goals from Lyons, freshman Anna Borgfeldt (Kristianstad, Sweden) and junior Kristen Eklund (Barrington, R.I.). Each goal was scored nearly three minutes apart from one another, beginning with Lyon’s score just over the seven minute mark into the period. Sophomore Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and Colin each were credited with an assist on the score. Kosta picked up her second assist on Borgfeldt’s goal, while sophomore Megan Hagg (Ajax, Ontario) and senior Chelsea Illchuk (Lockport, Manitoba) each earned an assist on Eklund’s score.
 
Lyons added her second goal of the game mid-way through the final frame, while Kosta buried her first of the score with seven seconds remaining in regulation to give the game its final score, 7-0.
 
Three goaltenders saw time this evening for Quinnipiac, as junior Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario), freshman Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Ontario) and senior Michaela Spiessl (Champion, Mich.) contributed to make eight saves on the evening. Their counterpart Jackie Rochefort made 23 saves through the first two frames, before being replaced by Kimberly Keller, who turned away 11 shots in the final stanza.
 
Quinnipiac begins its regular season next weekend when they travel to face No. 8 Mercyhurst for a two game set, beginning on Friday, Sept 30 with a 7 p.m. schedules start, followed by a Saturday, Oct. 1 contest slated to begin at 4 p.m.
