Four Raiders Net Goals in Exhibition Contest
HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/24/11) – The Colgate women's
hockey team had four different players score a goal in its first
exhibition game of the 2011-12 season against the Toronto Jr. Aeros
on Saturday afternoon.
Despite holding a 3-2 lead after the first period, the Raiders
eventually fell to Toronto, 8-4.
Sophomores Rachel
Walsh and Jocelyn
Simpson along with freshmen Casey
Dockus and Miriam
Drubel scored one goal apiece in the
game. Walsh and Simpson both scored power play goals.
The Aeros got on the scoreboard first with a pair of early goals in
the first period, but their lead was short-lived, with Colgate
scoring three straight goals to take the lead after the first 20
minutes of play. Walsh scored the team's opening goal at the 10:46
mark with assists from classmate Shannon
Doyle and
rookie Melissa
Kueber, while Dockus found the second goal less than
three minutes later with help from Simpson. Simpson then went on to
score the third goal of the period at the 17:09 mark with another
assist combination from Doyle and Kueber, to give Colgate a 3-2
lead at the end of the opening frame.
Toronto found an equalizer early in the second period at the 5:14
mark but then 15 seconds later, Drubel was able to score the
Raiders' fourth goal with help from sophomoresTaylor
Volpe and Stephanie
Giannopoulos to reclaim a the lead at 4-3.
Toronto then went on to score four more goals in the second period
and one in the third to win the game.
Rookies Susan
Allen and Brittney
Brooks both saw action between the
pipes for Colgate. Brooks had three saves in the first period while
Allen, who played the final two frames, had a total of 19
saves.
The team will play its second and final exhibition game next
weekend when it hosts Queens University on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7
p.m.
