Crimson Comeback Falls Short Against Dartmouth
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 9 Harvard women’s hockey
team outshot Dartmouth, 29-19, but dropped a 3-2 decision to the
Big Green at Bright Hockey Center Wednesday night. The Crimson
moved to 5-2-0 overall with the loss while Dartmouth improves to
.500 at 4-4-1 overall.
For the second straight game, the Crimson scored less than one
minute after the opening faceoff as Harvard showed its power-play
prowess once again. Jillian Dempsey collected the puck in the
corner and flung a pass to Josephine Pucci alone near the blueline.
Pucci fired a shot on net that made Dartmouth goalie Lindsay
Holdcroft lunge to her right, and Lyndsey Fry made a slow redirect
off Pucci’s shot that trickled into the net for a 1-0 lead
just 39 seconds in.
The Crimson killed a pair of penalties in the balk half of the
period, extending its penalties-killed streak to 13 straight and
ending the first period with a 1-0 lead and 9-8 shots
advantage.
The teams traded penalties in the first nine minutes of the second
stanza but strong goaltending by both Holdcroft and Laura Bellamy
kept the hosts in the lead by one. Dartmouth wouldn’t stay
quiet for much longer, however, as Kelly Foley stuffed home a
trickling puck to knot the score at 1-1 with 9:01 to play in the
period. Dartmouth grabbed the lead three minutes later, with
Camille Dumais notching her fourth goal of the season just after
another successful Crimson penalty kill. Harvard ended the period
with a 13-6 edge in shots, but found itself in a 2-1 hole after
two.
Harvard had its best chance to even the score midway through the
final frame, but the Big Green killed a 5-on-3 power play to get
back to full strength. Dartmouth cushioned its lead to two with
2:50 remaining in the contest, when Sasha Nanji knocked a shot past
Bellamy into the top shelf. Harvard refused to rollover, as Jillian
Dempsey found the back of the net for the fifth time this season
with 45 seconds left on the clock, but the Crimson could not muster
a shot in the final seconds.
The Crimson shutout Dartmouth on six power plays, giving Harvard 17
straight penalty kills, dating back to Nov. 18 against Clarkson,
but converted on just 1-of-7 man-up opportunities in the loss.
The Crimson will take the ice again after Thanksgiving, as it
welcomes No. 2/2 Minnesota to Bright Hockey for a two-game series
Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game is slated to begin at 4
p.m.
