Raiders Fall to Robert Morris in Penalty-Filled Contest
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/22/11) – The Colgate women's hockey
team experienced a 5-2 setback to Robert Morris on Tuesday night in
a game that saw 20 penalties called, 18 of which were in the final
two periods.
Sophomore Jocelyn Simpson scored the opening goal for the Raiders
while junior Jenna Klynstra found the second goal during an extra
skater advantage in the third frame.
In the first period both teams came out playing an exciting and
fast-paced game as they moved the puck up and down the ice. Despite
the Colonials holding an early shooting advantage, it was Colgate
(5-9-1, 2-4-1 ECAC Hockey) that was able to get on the scoreboard
first during a fast break to take a 1-0 lead at the 4:40 mark.
Sophomore Rachel Walsh passed the puck to freshman Melissa Kueber
who then skated down the right side and as she turned to go behind
the net, knocked it up to Simpson who then fired it past the goalie
from the top of the crease. The early goal increased the tempo of
the game as both teams aggressively searched for the second goal.
The Raiders came close to extending their lead with five minutes
left on the clock when a shot from junior Brittany Phillips hit the
pipe, however, it was Robert Morris that was able to find a tally
with just 38 seconds left in the stanza to tie the game at 1-1.
The second period was more physical than the first, slowing down
the pace of the game and resulting in nine penalties being dished
out by the referees. Both teams had their fair share of power play
advantages but it was the Colonials that were able to find a pair
of power play goals to take a 3-1 lead going into the final
frame.
Colgate found an early power play tally 1:19 into the third period
to put the team within one goal. Junior Jessica Hootz passed the
puck to Phillips on her right who blasted it towards the frame to
Klynstra, who then tipped it into the back of the net. However, the
one-goal deficit was short-lived, with Robert Morris answering back
less than three minutes later during an extra skater advantage to
increase its lead to 4-2. The Colonials then scored their final and
fourth power play goal of the game at the 17:32 mark to eventually
win the game 5-2. Nine penalties were called in the final 20
minutes of play.
The Raiders went 1-for-10 with the extra skater while Robert Morris
scored on four of its nine chances.
Colgate held a 32-25 shooting advantage in the game with senior
Kimberly Sass recording 20 saves for the Raiders and Kristen
DiCiocco making 30 stops for the Colonials.
Colgate will resume play this weekend with a two-game set against
Vermont on Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 27 both at 2 p.m. in
Starr Rink.
