Clarkson Defeats UNH, Attains Milestone Victory
The Golden Knights’ leading scorer, sophomore Jamie Lee
Rattray (Kanata, ONT) tallied both goals for the Clarkson
University Women’s Hockey team as the Green and Gold skated
to a 2-1 victory over the University of New Hampshire on Saturday
afternoon at Cheel Arena.
With the victory over the Hockey East foe, the Knights extended
their current unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2) and in the
process recorded a milestone win for the program. In its ninth year
as a Division I team, Clarkson owns a 150-111-38 all-time record
since the 2003-04 campaign, including a 4-1-3 mark this season.
The Knights controlled play throughout the majority of the game
against UNH (3-3-2) and outshot the Wildcats by nearly a 2-to-1
margin, 23-13.
Rattray scored the lone goal of the first period early in the
stanza off a great move in front. After taking a pass above the
circles from classmate Vanessa Gagnon (St. Constant, QUE), Rattray
deked a UNH defenseman in the slot and fired a quick shot up top at
2:59 for her fourth goal of the season.
The Wildcats tied it midway through the second when Kristina
Lavoie finished off a pass in front from Emma Clark at 9:05.
Under two minutes later, however, Rattray put the Green and Gold
back on top when she stuffed in a shot at the side of the net at
10:47. Gagnon, with her second assist of the game, and sophomore
Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) set up the goal. Through the
first eight games, Rattray has tallied 14 points on five goals and
nine assists.
The Knights’ defense, which was stingy all day, really shut
down UNH over the final 20 minutes allowing the Wildcats just three
shots in the period on sophomore goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa,
ONT). Howe finished with 12 saves.
Jenn Gilligan made 21 stops for UNH. Clarkson was 0-of-1 on the
power play and held the Wildcats scoreless on all three of their
man-advantage chances.
Clarkson, which skated to a 2-2 tie against fourth-ranked Boston
University on Friday, opens ECAC Hockey play next weekend at Cheel
Arena when it hosts conference powers Dartmouth and Harvard.
