Bobcats Blanked at Boston College
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Quinnipiac women’s ice
hockey team was defeated by No. 5/6 Boston College, 5-0, on Friday
afternoon at Kelley Rink. Quinnipiac’s overall record now
stands at 1-5, while Boston College improves to 3-1-1 overall with
the win.
Boston College wasted no time in finding the back of the net,
scoring at the 1:49 mark into the first period on just their third
shot in the frame. Senior Andrea Green tapped in her first goal of
the season off a rebound after a shot from junior Kristina Brown
was deflected in the front of the net. Brown and freshman Emily
Field were each credited with an assist on the score.
Freshman Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) provided
Quinnipiac’s best scoring opportunity in the stanza, breaking
free from a defender in the open ice with just under a minute
remaining. However, her wrister was snagged by Boston College
junior goaltender Corinne Boyles to keep the Eagles ahead after one
period, 1-0.
Vigilanti made multiple key glove saves early in the second
period, keeping Boston College off the board through nearly the
first 15 minutes of play. However, the Eagles grabbed a two-goal
lead with 5:41 remaining in the second period, scoring on its first
power-play opportunity of the afternoon. Junior Ashley Motherwell
knocked in her first goal of the season coming off a rebound
following a shot from junior Blake Bolden. Bolden and freshman
Emily Pfaizer each earned an assist on the goal.
The Bobcats came out strong in the third period looking for their
first score of the contest. Kosta’s shot 30 seconds into the
frame beat Boyles, but ricocheted off the pipe and out of play.
Despite an energized Quinnipiac squad to start the period, Boston
College netted its third goal of the contest at the 2:53 mark into
the final stanza. Junior Caitlin Walsh put away her first tally of
the season, coming off an assist from senior Allison Szlosek.
The Eagles went ahead, 4-0, at the 6:15 mark of the third period,
as Danielle Welch skated in to score a shorthanded goal for her
second tally of the season. Boston College added a fifth goal with
11:06 remaining in the game, as Field scored her second goal of the
year on Boston College’s second power-play score of the game.
In the contest, the Eagles were 2-for-3 overall on its power-play
chances, while Quinnipiac was 0-for-5.
Junior netminder Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) made 30
saves in net for Quinnipiac, while her counterpart Boyles turned
away 11 shots for the Eagles. Overall, the Eagles held a 35-to-11
shot advantage.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Oct. 28 when it travels to
Troy, N.Y. to face Rensselaer at 3 p.m.
