NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A 63-save effort from freshman goalie Jaimie Leonoff was not enough for Yale to knock off No. 9 Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon, as the Lakers scored a pair of late goals to finish off a 6-2 win over the Bulldogs. Sophomore forwards Jenna Ciotti and Jackie Raines scored Yale’s goals.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first 45 seconds of Friday afternoon’s loss to the Lakers, the Bulldogs immediately reversed their fortunes Saturday. Despite being outshot 26-7 in the first, Yale had the lead for a brief time after Raines scored at 11:45, assisted by freshman forward Stephanie Mock and freshman defenseman/forward Kelsey Summers (who got her first career point).

Mercyhurst tied the game three minutes later on a goal by forward Bailey Bram. The Lakers then scored the first three goals of the second period before Yale fought back to get within 4-2 on a power play goal by Ciotti, assisted by junior forward Alyssa Zupon and senior forward Aleca Hughes, at 16:57.

Yale remained within striking distance in the third but was outshot 22-7 in that period, and the Lakers increased their lead to 5-2 with a power play goal from Bram at 16:38 that finished off her hat trick. She had a hand in all six goals for the day as Mercyhurst added an empty netter with 10 seconds left.

Mercyhurst finished three-for-nine on the power play, while Yale was one-for-seven.

Combined with her 52-save effort in relief on Friday, Leonoff stopped 115 of 125 shots (.920) she saw for the weekend. While records are incomplete, prior to Saturday the last instance listed in the record book of a Yale goalie making that many saves in a game was Jan. 11, 1998, when Laurie Belliveau ’98 stopped 74 in a game at Dartmouth. Belliveau also twice made 78 saves in a game, the Yale single-game record.

Yale returns to Connecticut to play in the Nutmeg Classic at UConn next Friday, facing Robert Morris in the first round of the annual tournament featuring three of the Nutmeg State’s women’s ice hockey teams. UConn and Quinnipiac play in the other first-round game.
