Saints Fall to No. 10 Harvard
Nov. 19: The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team
suffered a 6-1 loss on Saturday to nationally-ranked No. 10 Harvard
University in Cambridge, MA.
Despite outshooting Harvard by a 27-26 mark, the Saints (6-5-3,
3-4-1) continued to struggle against the Crimson. The home
team improved to 5-1-0 (5-1-0) and outscored St. Lawrence 13-2 in
the regular season series while finishing with three power play
tallies on Saturday.
"Another strong effort from Harvard, though we played really well
in spurts and at times better than we did in Hanover," said St.
Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "We had some great chances
early and late, and it was nice to see our team play hard through
to the end of the game. We have a good hockey team with lots
of hockey left to play this season."
The Saints found themselves in a 1-0 hole only 56 seconds into
regulation, as Marissa Gedman scored on St. Lawrence goalie Caitlyn
Lahonen from the left side of the blue line. The Harvard
power play would then strike on its first try of the game, as Sarah
Edney finished a beautiful passing play from Kelsey Romatoski and
Samantha Reber for the 2-0 lead at 9:09 of the first.
The Crimson offense kept on chugging in the second, posting three
more goals, including two power-play markers, to take a commanding
5-0 lead into the final frame. Gina McDonald netted the Crimson's
third goal of the game just 1:55 into the second period, while
Elizabeth Parker made it 4-0 at 3:28 with an assist going to
Kaitlin Spurling. Harvard would then make it 3-for-3 on the
power play at 15:39, when Josephine Pucci scored her second goal of
the year for the 5-0 advantage.
St. Lawrence had created several great chances throughout the game
on Harvard goalie Laura Bellamy, but came away empty until the
12:54 mark of the third period. First-year student Margo Lund
scored her second goal of the year as she stuffed the puck behind
Bellamy to get St. Lawrence on the scoreboard trailing 5-1.
Fellow rookies Jacqueline Wand and Jessica Hon assisted on the
goal.
Harvard would cap the game's scoring when Jillian Dempsey scored an
empty net goal at 16:41 to bring the contest to its final of
6-1.
Bellamy finished with 26 saves on the afternoon, helping her team
post a perfect 8-for-8 mark on the penalty kill. Meanwhile,
Lahonen made 20 saves in the loss.
The Saints will have a quick turnaround this week, as they head to
Erie, PA for a pair of non-conference games against
nationally-ranked Mercyhurst College on Tuesday and Wednesday,
November 22 and 23.
