Bobcats Fall to No. 2/3 Cornell
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team was
defeated by ECAC Hockey opponent No. 2/3 Cornell on Saturday
afternoon at the High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden, Conn. With
the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 6-7-1 overall (5-2-1 ECAC Hockey),
while Cornell improves to 7-1-0 overall (6-1-0 ECAC Hockey).
The Bobcats received their goal late in the third period to avoid
the shutout, as sophomore forward Megan Hagg (Ajax, Ontario) netted
her second goal of the year. Fellow sophomore forward Kelly
Babstock's (Mississauga, Ontario) initial shot was saved by
Cornell's sophomore goaltender Lauren Slebodnick, but Hagg was in
perfect position to tap in the rebound.
Cornell's steady attack began with a goal by senior Chelsea
Karpenko, whose goal at the 12:29 mark into the first period gave
the Big Red the 1-0 lead. Karpenko then added her second goal of
the game minutes later, scoring at the 17:05 mark, before senior
Rebecca Johnston added the team's third score of the frame at the
19:01 mark.
The Big Red continued its pressure in the second stanza, receiving
goals from sophomore Brianne Jenner (4:18), freshman Emily Fulton
(13:24), and sophomore Jessica Campbell (15:54), extending its lead
to 6-0 by the second intermission. Following Jenner's score,
Quinnipiac's sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge,
Ontario) was replaced by freshman netminder Chelsea Laden
(Lakeville, Minn.), who protected the net for the remainder of the
game. Vigilanti turned away 11 shots during her time between the
pipes, while Laden made 15 saves. Slebodnick made 30 saves for
Cornell, earning her fourth win of the season.
The teams traded goals in the third period, as Cornell added its
final goal at the 5:34 mark on senior Catherine White's sixth goal
of the season. Hagg followed with Quinnipiac's goal to bring the
game to its final score of 7-1.
The Bobcats did well to stay out of the penalty box and committed
only three penalties, compared to Cornell, which was whistled for
seven penalties overall. Cornell went 1-for3 on its power-play
opportunities, while Quinnipiac went 0-for-5 on its extra skater
advantages. The Big Red owned a slight shot advantage,
33-to-31.
The Bobcats return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they host
Boston College at 7 p.m.
