Colgate Rallies to Defeat Princeton
PRINCETON (11/19/11) - The Princeton women's hockey team held a
three-goal first period lead and a one-goal lead in the third
period, but couldn't hold off Colgate in a 6-4 loss on Saturday
afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Tigers took advantage of Colgate penalties in the first period
to build a 3-0 lead. Denna Laing gave Princeton a 1-0 lead in the
game's seventh minute on a delayed penalty as Sally Butler's shot
was headed wide, but bounced off Laing and into the net.
Princeton extended the lead less than a minute later on the ensuing
power play when Danielle DiCesare slid home a rebound in front. Ali
Pankowski had initial shot and Olivia Mucha had an assist, her
second of the game. Princeton added a goal at 13:26 of the period
when Charissa Stadnyk capped a rush up-ice with her first goal of
the season. Julie Johnson and Gabie Figueroa assisted her
backhander.
Colgate charged back in the second period as it took advantage of
two Princeton penalties. Melissa Kueber put the Raiders on the
board two minutes into the period on the power play a Rachel Walsh
power-play tally in the 15th minute brought Colgate within a goal.
The Raiders drew even a minute later when Taylor Volpe won a
face-off back to Shannon Doyle who scored on a blast from the
point.
Butler gave Princeton the lead five minutes into the third period
on the power play from Paula Romanchuk and Pankowski, but Colgate
scored the game's final three goals to overcome the 4-3 Princeton
lead and win 6-4. Jocelyn Simpson scored unassisted on a drive to
the net to even the game and Katie Case scored the game winner on a
blast from the point. Shannon Doyle sealed the win with a shot into
the empty net.
Kimberly Sass made 25 saves for the win while Rachel Weber had 32
in the loss. Princeton was outshot 38-29 in the game. Both teams
scored two goals on six power-play chances.
Princeton is now 4-5-1 while Colgate is 5-8-1. The Tigers will take
a break from league play next weekend as they travel to New England
to take on Boston College and New Hampshire.
