Harvard Rolls Past St. Lawrence
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women’s hockey team
took full advantage of St. Lawrence penalties as the Crimson posted
three power-play goals in five chances to claim a 6-1 win over the
Saints Saturday at Bright Hockey Center. The victory gives Harvard
its second season series sweep in as many days and ups it overall
and conference mark to 5-1-0.
The win also marks Harvard’s fourth consecutive victory over
the Saints by at least a five-goal margin, as Harvard has outscored
St. Lawrence 27-6 in the teams’ last four matchups.
The hosts jumped out to an early lead, scoring just 56 seconds into
the opening frame. Sharpshooter Marissa Gedman corralled a puck
towards the left side of the blueline and fired a shot that weaved
through a host of players, beating Caitlyn Lahonen for a quick 1-0
edge.
The Harvard power-play showed its effectiveness on its first chance
of the day, giving Harvard a 2-0 lead at 9:09 of the first. Kelsey
Romatoski, Samantha Reber and Sarah Edney worked the power play to
perfection, with Edney firing a shot from the blueline that snuck
past Lahonen for a 2-0 edge at the first break.
The Crimson offense kept on chugging in the second, posting three
more goals, including two power-play markers, to take a commanding
5-0 lead into the final frame. Gina McDonald netted the
Crimson’s third goal of the game just 1:55 into the second
period, capitalizing on a power-play off passes from Jillian
Dempsey and Josephine Pucci.
Kaitlin Spurling turned a great individual effort into the fourth
goal of the game at the 3:28 mark, stripping a St. Lawrence player
of the puck at mid-ice and feeding Elizabeth Parker, who blasted
home her second tally of the season. Harvard made it
three-for-three on the power play at 15:39 of the second as Pucci
netted her first goal, and third point, of the contest after
McDonald and Lyndsey Fry put touches on the puck.
St. Lawrence finally broke through late in the third period as
Margo Lund picked up her second goal of the season, stuffing home a
puck from close range after Jaqueline Wand and Jessica Hon assisted
on the play. Harvard had a final answer almost four minutes later
as Dempsey put home a Fry pass into an empty net to cap the 6-1
final.
Bellamy was stellar once again for the Crimson, stopping 26 of the
27 shots she faced and helping Harvard go 8-for-8 on the penalty
kill. Pucci was the game’s scoring leader with a goal and two
assists, while McDonald (1g, 1a), Fry (2a), and Dempsey (1g, 1a)
all had two points in the game.
Harvard continues its home stretch with another league opponent,
when it faces Dartmouth Wednesday in a 7:00 p.m., showdown.
