Raiders Earn Road Win
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (10/19/11) – The Colgate women's hockey
team extended its winning streak to three games on Wednesday night
when it defeated Syracuse 3-1 at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Three players scored a goal for the Raiders in the win. ECAC
Player of the Week, junior Brittany Phillips, scored the team's
opening goal while sophomores Taylor Volpe and Caroline Potolicchio
scored the other two. Volpe also had an assist in the game while
ECAC Rookie of the Week Melissa Kueber had two points from two
assists.
Both teams jumped out to a quick start with Colgate (3-2) firing
the first shot on net but could not get past the Orange's
goaltender. Syracuse then took a series of shots of its own, one of
which hit the pipe but could not find the net. As the period
progressed, both teams continued to attack aggressively, forcing
both goaltenders to make some strong saves but neither team could
find a goal, ending the first 20 minutes of play with the score
still at 0-0 despite taking a total of 20 shots combined.
A penalty on the Orange at the end of the opening period gave
Colgate a two-minute power play advantage at the beginning of the
second. The Raiders did not hesitate to take advantage of having an
extra skater, finding a goal from Phillips just 36 seconds into the
frame to put the score at 1-0. Sophomore Shannon Doyle and Kueber
were credited with the assists. Down a goal, Syracuse picked up its
pace and went on an offensive surge that led to seven shots on net
but were denied by senior goaltender Kimberly Sass. The pressure
did not faze Colgate, which despite being down two skaters at one
point in the period, was able to generate some offense and increase
their lead to two goals at the 16:06 mark courtesy of Volpe with
help from Kueber and senior co-captain Amanda Kirwan.
After a tough second stanza in which Colgate was outshot 11-7,
both teams came out playing a physical game. Syracuse struck first,
attacking the Raiders' net in the opening minutes of the final
period however, it was Colgate that was able to find a goal at the
6:11 mark to take a 3-0 lead. Volpe won the faceoff and knocked it
to freshman Miriam Drubel who then fired it at the net. Potolicchio
picked up the rebound and slipped it past the goalie to score her
second goal of the season. The Orange was eventually able to get on
the scoreboard with a power play goal at the 18:21 mark to put the
final score at 3-1.
Kimberly Sass had 28 saves for the Raiders while Kallie Billadeau
led Syracuse in goal with 16 stops.
Colgate will have the weekend off before opening ECAC Hockey play
next week with a trio of league matchups against nationally-ranked
Cornell, Brown and Yale.
