Saints Blank Dartmouth
Nov. 18: St. Lawrence University rookie goaltender Carmen
MacDonald earned her first collegiate shutout on Friday night, as
the Pictou, NS native made a career-high 38 saves en route to a 2-0
win for the women's hockey team over Dartmouth College in Hanover,
NH.
The victory moves the Saints to 6-4-3 (3-3-1) while the Big Green
suffered its first ECAC Hockey loss of the year to fall to 3-1-1 in
conference and 3-3-1 overall.
"Carmen was able to keep Dartmouth off the board until we were able
to get one past (Lindsay) Holdcroft," said St. Lawrence head coach
Chris Wells. "Dartmouth had a great effort and probably
deserved a better fate. We are excited about the two points
and look forward to playing some great hockey tomorrow at
Harvard."
The Big Green held 14-8 and 13-4 advantages in shots on goal in the
first and second period, respectively. However, the
goaltenders owned the first 40:00 minutes to keep the game
scoreless heading into the final stanza.
With MacDonald playing beautifully between the posts, the Saints
finally broke through at 8:44 of the third period when junior
Brooke Fernandez scored her fifth goal of the year on
Holdcroft. The Bloomfield, CT native beat the Dartmouth
netminder after taking a pass from captain Karell Emard at the top
of the left circle. Sophomore Rylee Smith also had a helper
on what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Though the Big Green worked to score the tying goal throughout the
final stages of the third, MacDonald continued to shine.
Junior Kelly Sabatine put the game away for the Scarlet and Brown,
as she scored an unassisted empty net insurance goal with only 45
seconds remaining, bringing the game to its final score of 2-0.
Both St. Lawrence and Dartmouth closed with a 0-for-2 mark on the
power play, while the home team closed with a 38-18 lead in shots
on goal.
The Saints will face off against Harvard University tomorrow,
Saturday, November 19 at 4:00pm in Cambridge, MA.
