Babstock Becomes Program's All-Time Points Leader In Bobcats Win
HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore forward Kelly Babstock
(Mississauga, Ontario) became the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey
team's all-time points leader in impressive fashion on Friday
evening against Colgate, garnering a game-high four points (two
goals, two assists), as well as netting the game-winning tally in
the team's 6-2 victory. In what marks her 50th career game played,
the reigning 2010-11 ECAC Hockey Player and Rookie of the Year has
now earned 75 points in her career (38 goals, 37 assists), passing
Quinnipiac's previous all-time points leader, Vicki Graham, who
finished her career in 2007 with 73 career points. The win improves
Quinnipiac's overall record to 6-6-1 (5-1-1 ECAC Hockey), while the
loss drops Colgate's overall record to 4-8-1 (1-4-1 ECAC
Hockey).
Babstock has turned it on as of late, accumulating seven points in
the last two games, giving her a team-high 16 points on eight goals
and eight assists. The sophomore has now rocketed up the
leader-board amongst ECAC Hockey skaters as well, ranking third in
the league in points and tied for second in goals scored.
Following a relatively quite first period, the floodgates opened up
in the second period as the game's first five goals were scored in
the final nine minutes of the stanza. Babstock began the trend with
a goal at the 11:19 mark into the second period. Babstock buried a
shot in front, while sophomore Felica Vieweg (Port Orange, Fla.)
and freshman Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) each earned an
assist on the score.
Colgate responded with two quick goals, separated just 24 seconds
apart, as sophomore Jocelyn Simpson and freshman Miriam Drubel
notched their third and fifth respective goals of the season.
Quinnipiac trailed for only 41 seconds before re-tying the score at
two-apiece, as junior defender Regan Boulton (Brandon, Manitoba)
buried her second goal of the season at the 15:49 mark, coming off
assists from senior defender Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.) and
Babstock. The Mississauga native could not be stopped from figuring
in her third straight goal (and record-breaking 74th career point)
for Quinnipiac, as her goal at the 19:11 mark into the second
stanza gave the Bobcats the 3-2 lead heading into the third
period.
Quinnipiac continued to ride its wave of momentum into the third
period, and increased its lead to 4-2 under a minute into the
action. Junior forward Brittany Lyons corralled a pass from fellow
junior forward Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, Manitoba) and slapped
in her third goal of the season, past Colgate senior goaltender
Kimberly Sass. Senior forward Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) was
also credited with an assist on the goal.
Kosta and Babstock connected for the third time in the contest at
the 9:02 mark into the third and final frame, this time switching
roles, as Kosta netted her second goal of the year on the
power-play score, while Babstock earned her eighth assist. Frykas
added the Bobcats' sixth goal of the game on a counter attack at
the 17:30 mark into the period, firing in a backhanded shot over
the shoulder of Sass to make the score, 6-2. Lyons and Frykas
skated in on a two-on-one advantage, where Lyons fed Frykas in
stride for the one-timer backhand.
Quinnipiac led Colgate in the shot department, outshooting the
Raiders 39-to-27 in the game. Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti
(Woodbridge, Ontario) turned away 25 shots for Quinnipiac, while
Sass made 33 saves for Colgate.
The Raiders were whistled for six penalties in the game, while
Quinnipiac was called for four infractions. The Bobcats were
2-for-4 on its extra skater opportunities, while Colgate was
1-for-3.
The Bobcats return to the ice tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Nov.
19, when they host No. 2/3 Cornell at 4 p.m.
