Brown Battles Maine to Overtime Tie
Orono, Maine – An action packed first period, an important
Brown goal in the third and a late Maine surge led to a 4-4
overtime tie in the first of two games in the Battle of the Bears.
Brown (2-2-4) boasted three players with multiple point nights, but
Maine (7-5-3) got two goals with less than five minutes to play in
regulation to force overtime.
It was a whirlwind first period as five goals were scored in the
first 15:02 of the game, three on the power play.
Brown got on the board first as the freshman connection of Sarah
Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) and Brittany Moorehead (Clinton,
N.Y.) put Brown up 1-0, just 41 seconds into the game. Moorehead
was able to set up Robson for her second goal of the season
Maine was able to rebound however, as Tori Pasquariello tallied
the equalizer less than three minutes later. Black Bears went ahead
at 7:45 on a power play goal by Brianne Kilgour.
Senior co-captain Katelyn Landry (Belmont, Mass.) made sure the
Black Bear lead did not hold for long as she used the
player-advantage to tie it up just over two and half minutes later,
taking the feed from rookie Shannon Flatley (Toronto, Ontario) for
her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Bears kept the pressure on, getting another power play which
led to last year's leading scorer junior Laurie Jolin (Lachine,
Quebec) tallying her first goal of the 2011-12 season at 15:02.
Senior co-captain Paige Pyett (Milestone, Saskatchewan) and
sophomore Jessica Hoyle (Toronto, Ontario) were there for the
assists.
After a quiet second period, Brown was able to get an important
fourth goal from Hoyle on the power play at 8:32. Jolin and Robson
were there on the assists.
The goal proved to be crucial for the Bears as Maine was able to
net two goals late, at 15:45 and 17:48 to force overtime.
There were five total penalties in the overtime period, three on
Brown and two on Maine, but neither team could take advantage as
the game ended in a 4-4 tie.
The Battle of the Bars: Game Two, will take place tomorrow,
Saturday, November 19 at 3 p.m.
