HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/15/11) – Colgate women's hockey
freshman Melissa Kueber scored four goals to lead the team past
Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders took the two-game set
from Lindenwood, capping the sweep with an 8-2 victory at Starr
Rink.
Kueber had a game-high four goals and an assist while junior

a team-best seven points. Sophomore Shannon Doyle and freshman
Miriam Drubel had one goal and one assist apiece while sophomore

Colgate (2-2) ignited its offense once again in the first 20
minutes of play, outshooting the Lady Lions 21-7 en route to
scoring four goals in the first frame. The Raiders got on the
scoreboard early with a pair of goals from Kueber in the opening 10
minutes to take 2-0 lead. Phillips had an assist in both goals
while Simpson had an assist in the first goal and Doyle had one in
the second. After an exciting start, the team continued to play an
attacking game, firing a series of shots on net and forcing Taylor
Fairchild to make some strong saves. As the period progressed, the
pressure proved to be too much for Fairchild, with Colgate finding
another two goals first at the 11:30 mark and then at the 15:44
mark to put the score at 4-0. Doyle scored the first goal with help
from Simpson and Phillips, who also scored the second goal. Simpson
and Kueber were credited with assists in Phillips' goal.
After a strong first period, the Raiders were determined to carry
their scoring momentum into the second period. However, this time
around Lindenwood was able to generate some offense of its own and
relieve some of the pressure in its defensive end. The Lions'
aggressive play soon resulted in a penalty, giving Colgate a power
play opportunity, which it capitalized on with a goal from Kueber
at the 8:38 mark. The rookie scored the goal off a pass from
Phillips to put the score at 5-0. Drubel also had an assist on the
goal. Both teams continued to battle it out on the ice for the rest
of the stanza but by the end of it Colgate held a five-goal
advantage.
The final period began in a similar fashion to the first, with the
Raiders tallying three early goals from Kueber, Phillips and Drubel
to take an 8-0 lead with less than seven minutes left in the game.
Junior Jessica Hootz and Phillips had assists in the first goal
while Simpson and Drubel helped in the second tally which came on a
power play. Freshman Casey Dockus and senior co-captain Amanda
Kirwan assisted in the third goal. A penalty on Colgate in the
final five minutes of play led to a power play advantage for
Lindenwood, during which the Lions were able to find a pair of
goals in the closing minutes of the game to put the final score at
8-2.
The Raiders outshot Lindenwood 44-25 and went 2-for-5 on the power
play. Senior Kimberly Sass had 22 saves in her second win for
Colgate, while Fairchild had 36 stops for the Lions.
The Raiders will resume play on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when they travel
to Syracuse for a matchup against the Orange at 7 p.m.
