Cornell Dominates Brampton in Exhibition Game
ITHACA, N.Y. – Coming off back-to-back Frozen Four
appearances, the Cornell women's ice hockey team looked right back
in form in its season-opening exhibition Friday night at Lynah
Rink.
The Big Red scored two goals in the first period, added one more
in the second and broke out for three in the third for a resounding
6-0 victory against Brampton of the Women's Canadian Hockey
League.
Freshman Jillian Saulnier started her Cornell career on the right
foot, scoring two goals to lead the team. Rebecca Johnston, Laura
Fortino and Brianne Jenner each had two assists.
The first goal came quickly when Johnston took a shot from the
point just more than two minutes into the game. Fellow senior
Kendice Ogilvie was in front of the net to deflect the shot through
the legs of Brampton keeper Sonja Van der Bliek, and Cornell had a
1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Saulnier scored on a two-on-one break by the
Big Red. Johnston was again responsible for the primary assist,
passing to Saulnier on her left for the easy putaway.
Four minutes into the second period, Saulnier struck again, this
time on a pass from sophomore Alyssa Gagliardi. The third
period saw goals from Jessica Campbell, Catherine White and Olivia
Cook as the game got chippy. Cook's goal came with under a minute
left on a power play, making it the second power play goal the Big
Red scored in the game. Cook also ended the night with a +3 rating
to lead the team.
Brampton played undisciplined hockey, committing 11 penalties
including a five-minute major late in the game for contact to the
head. Cornell committed just three penalties and was perfect on the
kill.
Senior goalie Amanda Mazzotta started the night for Cornell and
recorded 31 minutes of shutout play, saving 10 shots. Lauren
Slebodnick picked up where Mazzotta left off, stopping 11 Brampton
shots in her 29 minutes and change.
Cornell starts its regular season on Tuesday in an ECAC Hockey
battle with rival Colgate in Hamilton. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
