Raiders Roll in Home Opener

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/14/11) – The Colgate women's hockey team secured its first win of the season on Friday afternoon when it defeated Lindenwood 7-2 in Starr Rink.

Six different Raiders scored a goal in the win. Junior Brittany Phillips led the team with two goals and one assist while sophomore Jocelyn Simpson had one goal and an assist. Sophomores Taylor Volpe, Megan Wickens and Caroline Potolicchio, as well as freshman Melissa Kueber scored one goal each, while rookies Casey Dockus and Miriam Drubel picked up two points in the game from two assists apiece.

Colgate (1-2) came out to an attacking start in the first period, outshooting the Lions 25-6 in the first 20 minutes of play. After creating several scoring opportunities and forcing the Lindenwood goaltender to make some tough saves, the Raiders finally found the back of the net at the 9:27 mark. Simpson used her speed to skate in through the left side and backhand the puck past the goalie to score the opening goal. Junior Jessica Hootz was credited with the assist. The team then scored a second goal at the 13:45 mark when Volpe picked up a rebound and knocked it into the net to put the Raiders up 2-0 with help from Drubel and Dockus. The Lions came close to getting one back, finding the net in a scramble in front of Colgate's net but the goal was called back because it was kicked in.

Feeling the pressure, the Raiders then went on an offensive surge that resulted in two late goals in the 17th minute. The team first netted a goal at the 17:22 mark when Phillips used a nifty deflection to beat the goalie off a pass from sophomore Stephanie Giannopoulos to score its third goal. Then, 34 seconds later, Kueber added a fourth goal with help from Simpson and Phillips to give Colgate a 4-0 advantage at the end of the first period

The second period was much slower for the Raiders, who were plagued by a series of penalties that allowed Lindenwood to generate its attack once again. The Lions eventually found their first goal at the end of the second frame to put the score at 4-1 going into the final stanza.

Colgate came out to an explosive start in the third period, scoring a goal just 17 seconds into play from Wickens. She picked up a pass from freshman Katie Case, skated down the middle of the ice and fired the puck into the net to increase the team's lead to 5-1. Still carrying their offensive rhythm, the Raiders were able to find a sixth and seventh goal at the 13:55 and 15:04 marks from Phillips and Potolicchio to extend their lead to six goals. Phillips scored a power play goal with assists from Drubel and senior co-captain Amanda Kirwan while Potolicchio had help from Dockus and senior co-captain Heidi Peterson. Lindenwood then found a late goal in the 18th minute to put the final score at 7-2.

Colgate outshot the Lions 49-23. Senior Kimberly Sass had 21 saves in the game for the Raiders while Lindenwood's Taylor Fairchild had 42 stops.

The team will resume play tomorrow (Oct. 15) when it faces Lindenwood in the second match of the two-game set at 3 p.m. in Starr Rink.
