Kosziwka Scores Twice in the Knights' Win at Syracuse
Senior Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) scored twice and
sophomore Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) connected for the
game-winner as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team
gained a hard fought 3-2 non-league victory over Syracuse in
Central NY Friday night.
The Golden Knights, who are unbeaten in their last three games
(2-0-1), host the Orange on Saturday afternoon in a 3:30 p.m.
contest at Cheel Arena to complete the weekend home-and-home series
against the College Hockey America foe. Clarkson stands at 2-1-2
overall, while Syracuse is 2-3.
The Orange got the early jump on Clarkson at the Tennity Ice
Pavilion with a goal by Margot Scharfe at 11:21 of the first
period. Late in the stanza, however, the Knights would tie the game
when Kosziwka connected off an assist by junior defenseman Hailey
Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) at 17:22.
After as scoreless second period, Kosziwka put the Green and Gold
on top with her second goal at 7:38 of the third with sophomore
Vanessa Gagnon (St. Constant, QUE) assisting. At the 14:00 mark,
the Orange’s Kaillie Goodnough tallied unassisted to knot the
game at 2-2.
The Knights’ leading scorer last season, Rattray came through
with the game-winner with 2:19 remaining for her second goal of the
season. Sophomore Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) assisted.
Syracuse held a significant advantage in shots with a 36-19 margin,
but sophomore goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) was up to the
task with a 34-save effort, including 28 stops over the final 40
minutes.
The Knights were 0-of-5 on the power play, while Syracuse was
0-of-4 with the extra skater.
