CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) factored in all three Quinnipiac goals, collecting a goal and two assists in the contest, to lead the women’s ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over ECAC Hockey opponent St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena. The win improves Quinnipiac’s ECAC Hockey record to 4-1-1 and its overall record to 5-6-1, while St. Lawrence falls to 2-3-1 in ECAC Hockey action and 5-4-3 overall.
 
Babstock’s goal at the 14:11 mark into the first period increased her team-leading total to six on the season. Sophomore forward Megan Hagg (Ajax, Ontario) netted the game-winning goal for Quinnipiac at the 18:35 mark into the first period (her first-career tally), while junior Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, Manitoba) added the Bobcats’ first score of the game at the 11:04 mark into the opening stanza.
 
Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) made 17 saves in goal for Quinnipiac, while her counterpart freshman Carmen MacDonald made 13 saves for the Saints.
 
The Saints were the first to find the back of the net, as a power-play goal from junior Kelly Sabatine gave St. Lawrence the 1-0 lead at the 5:58 mark into first period. Sabatine and the Saints were on a 4-on-3 power-play opportunity following a quick succession of penalties against both squads. The junior found a hole in the Quinnipiac defense and skated in unmarked with the puck before wristing in the shot past junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario).
 
Sabatine’s penalty later in the period led to Quinnipiac’s first goal of the contest, a power-play score from Frykas at the 11:04 mark into the period. Quinnipiac moved the puck clockwise through a series of passes, before Babstock slid a pass to Frykas who had stationed herself on the crease. Frykas’ initial shot was saved by freshman goaltender Carmen MacDonald, but was able to knock in her own rebound for her second goal of the season.
 
Quinnipiac sensed the momentum shift and remained aggressive in St. Lawrence’s offensive zone, leading to Babstock’s goal at the 14:11 mark into the stanza to give Quinnipiac the 2-0 lead. Senior Melissa Perry (Champion, Mich.) and sophomore Amanda Colin (Burnsville, Minn.) each earned an assist on the score.
 
Hagg capped the Bobcats explosive first period with her first-career goal with just 1:25 remaining in the frame. The Ajax native slipped behind St. Lawrence’s defense and glided towards the crease unmarked, as the action was contained in the Saint’ defensive corner. Babstock saw Hagg alone and delivered a crisp pass to her fellow classmate, who took a quick touch and banged home the goal. Freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario), along with Babstock, was credited with an assist.
 
St. Lawrence closed Quinnipiac’s lead to 3-2 with its second power-play goal of the game at the 16:42 mark into the second period. Junior Brooke Fernandez’s slap shot from the point beat Vigilanti who was screened on the play. Senior Alley Bero and Sabatine earned assists on the goal. The score would prove to be the final tally for either squad in the contest, as the teams skated to a scoreless third period of action.
 
Both teams kept their respective seats in the penalty box warm, as 13 total penalties were whistled in the game. Quinnipiac went 1-for-6 on its power-play chances, while St. Lawrence went 2-for-6 on its extra skater opportunities.
 
Quinnipiac returns home next weekend when it hosts Colgate and No. 2 Cornell on Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19. Friday’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, while Saturday’s game will begin at 4 p.m.
