ITHACA, N.Y. – Two early goals by the Big Red set the tone
for the contest as the 10th-ranked Harvard women's hockey team
dropped its first game of the season, 5-3 to No. 2/2 Cornell,
Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. Harvard slips to 3-1-0 with the
loss while its Ivy rival improves to 5-1-0, 4-1-0 ECAC on the
season.
Penalties bit the Crimson twice early on, leading to two Cornell
goals through the first eight minutes of play. Jillian Saulnier got
the Big Red on the board 5:55 into the game with a power-play goal
off feeds from Alyssa Gagliardi and Chelsea Karpenko. Less than two
minutes later, Karpenko added a power-play marker of her own,
converting passes from Catherine White and Gagliardi.
Harvard was able to muster an answer before the close of the first
period, getting on the board with 4:43 showing on the clock. Rookie
Sarah Edney notched her first collegiate goal, with Kalley
Armstrong and freshman Hillary Crowe assisting on the play. Crowe's
assist represented her first collegiate point as Harvard closed the
first stanza down, 2-1.
White and Gagliardi combined for Cornell's third goal just past the
halfway point of the second, extending the hosts' lead back to two
goals at the 10:23 mark. The Crimson showed its power-play prowess
3:38 later as Crowe collected her first collegiate goal off a pass
from Armstrong, who picked up her second helper of the night.
Harvard held a slight, 7-6, shots advantage in the middle frame,
but entered the second intermission staring at a 3-2 deficit.
Cornell came out firing to start the third, but Harvard goalie
Laura Bellamy kept the Crimson in the game through the first 10
minutes of the third. With 7:23 to play in the game, the Crimson
found the equalizer as Armstrong collected her third assist of the
game, feeding Kaitlin Spurling on the game-tying goal at 12:37.
Saulnier had a swift response, however, poking home an unassisted
goal just eight seconds later and Emily Fulton added the insurance
with an unassisted tally at 14:14 to cap the 5-3 final.
Armstrong's three assists were the highlight of the night for the
Crimson, while Crowe finished with two points on a goal and an
assist. Bellamy collected a season-high 31 saves in the loss.
The Crimson is back in action Nov. 18 as it welcomes Clarkson to
Bright Hockey Center for its home opener. The opening faceoff is
slated for 7 p.m.
