Clarkson Closes Out 2011 on Five-Game Win Streak
With her second goal of the weekend, junior Danielle Skirrow
(Trenton, ONT) scored the game’s lone goal and junior Erica
Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted 22 saves as the Clarkson University
Women’s Hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Niagara
University. Clarkson defeated the Purple Eagles 1-0 in non-league
action at Dwyer Arena on Sunday afternoon for the Golden
Knights’ fifth straight victory.
Clarkson, which skated past Niagara 3-1 on Saturday, has won eight
of its last nine games, and enters a lengthy break with a 12-4-4
overall record and its longest win streak since early in the
2009-10 schedule. The Knights stand in second place in ECAC Hockey
with a 6-3-1 league mark. The Green and Gold are now off until
January 5-6 when they travel to Boston to faceoff nationally-ranked
Northeastern and Boston College.
Clarkson and Niagara (7-9-5) battled through two periods of
scoreless hockey before the Knights broke the ice with a power-play
tally early in the third. Skirrow converted off a pass from junior
defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) at 5:01 for the
game-winner, her ninth goal of the season.
With nine saves apiece in both the first and second periods and
four more stops in the third, Howe posted her fifth shutout of the
season (tied for second in the nation) and seventh career
whitewash. The Knights have six shutouts on the year and three over
the past five games.
Clarkson’s penalty kill, which is ranked the best in the
country (77-85, 90.6%), held Niagara scoreless on five power-play
opportunities. The Knights went 1-of-6 with the man-advantage.
