Saints Hand Princeton First Conference Loss

Nov. 11: Four different players scored goals and sophomore goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen turned in a solid 29-save performance, lifting the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 4-1 win over Princeton University on Friday  in Appleton Arena.

St. Lawrence improves to 5-3-3 (2-2-1) on the season having dealt the Tigers (4-2-1, 3-1-1) their first ECAC Hockey loss of the year.

"I thought we gave a solid effort all around tonight, especially from Caitlyn," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "Our defense cleared pucks when we needed them out.  Princeton is always an up-and-down affair and tonight was the same as the game was closer than the final score indicated."

The Saints closed with a 35-30 advantage in shots on goal, while neither team (SLU 0-for-5; Princeton 0-for-6) scored on the power play.

Co-captain Karell Emard got the Saints on the scoreboard first a mere 3:20 into the first period as she took a pass from sophomore Rylee Smith and snapped a wrist-shot that beat Princeton goalie Rachel Weber stick-side.  The goal, which was also assisted by Kelly Sabatine, was Emard's fourth of the year.

The Tigers would tie the game midway through the first, taking advantage of a turnover in the St. Lawrence zone.  A Saint player tried to slide a pass from behind Lahonen's net, but was intercepted by Brianna Leahy.  Leahy quickly slid the puck into the net with the goalie well out of position for her second goal of the year.

Sophomore Bailey Habscheid would give the Saints their momentum back only 3:07 later, though, as she picked up her first goal of the year on a breakaway try.  Sophomore Mel Desrochers got the play started with a pretty backhanded pass towards center ice where Habscheid took the puck in one-on-one against Weber.  The Wymark, SK native wristed a hard shot into the net for a 2-1 St. Lawrence lead.

A pair of tallies only 1:13 apart early in the second period would prove to be all the offense the home team would need on Friday.  Smith's fifth goal of the year came at 3:13 for a 3-1 cushion while Desrochers followed with her third of the year at 4:26 to open up the 4-1 advantage.

The three-goal lead was plenty for Lahonen, who kept the Tigers' offense struggling throughout the second period.  The St. Lawrence defense then allowed only four shots on goal in the final stanza to solidify the conference win.

The Saints will look to earn another two points in the ECAC Hockey standings tomorrow against a tough Quinnipiac team at 4:00pm at Appleton Arena.
