Bobcats Dealt First ECAC Hockey Loss
POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team
fell to ECAC Hockey opponent Clarkson, 3-0, on Friday evening at
Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y. The Bobcats' first ECAC Hockey loss
drops their league record to 3-1-1 (4-6-1 overall), while the win
improves Clarkson's league record to 2-2-1 and its overall record
to 6-3-4.
Despite a first period in which Quinnipiac owned a solid 15-to-9
shot advantage, Clarkson snuck in the game's first goal by junior
goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) with just 51
seconds remaining in the frame to take the 1-0 lead. Sophomore
forward Brittany Styner collected a loose puck in Quinnipiac's
defensive zone, skated across the crease, and backhanded in her
first goal of the year.
Quinnipiac continued to skate hard in the second period, pressuring
Clarkson's defense through most of the stanza. The Bobcat's
aggressive style of play caused Clarkson to commit three penalties
in the frame, yet Quinnipiac was unable to find the game's
equalizer. Freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario)
nearly tied the score just seconds before the end of the period,
however a save by sophomore netminder Erica Howe kept the score 1-0
heading into the final period play. Kosta led the Bobcats with
eight total shots in the game.
Earlier in the period Vigilanti stood strong in net following a
turnover in Quinnipiac's defensive zone, which resulted in an
immediate point-blank shot for the Golden Knights. The junior
snagged the shot for one of her nine saves in the period. Overall,
Vigilanti made 19 saves on the evening, while her counterpart Howe
turned away 27 shots for Clarkson.
The Golden Knights took control in the third period, extending
their lead with 13:38 remaining in the frame, as sophomore defender
Vanessa Plante netted her second goal of the season. Clarkson's
forwards Shelby Nisbet and Hailey Wood were each credited with an
assist on the score.
Clarkson added its third and final goal of the game under three
minutes later to increase the lead to 3-0. Senior forward Juana
Baribeau redirected a shot from fellow senior Danielle Bourdreau,
and netted her second score of the season.
Quinnipiac dominated at the faceoff circle all evening, edging
Clarkson with a 36-to-23 mark. The Bobcats also owned a slight
27-to22 overall shot advantage. Each team went scoreless on its
power-play opportunites, as Quinnipiac went 0-for-4 and Clarkson
0-for-3
Quinnipiac looks to rebound when it returns to the ice tomorrow
afternoon, Saturday, Nov. 12, when it visits St. Lawrence for a 4
p.m. start.
