Bellamy Buoys Harvard to Road Win Over Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior goalie Laura Bellamy recorded her
first clean sheet of the 2011-12 season as the Harvard women's
hockey team took down Colgate, 2-0, Friday night at Starr Rink. The
Crimson ups its record to a perfect 3-0-0 on the season with all
three victories coming on the road against conference opponents.
Bellamy came into the game with a 0.99 goals-against average,
which ranked second in the nation. With the shutout, her GAA drops
to an impressive 0.66, while her save percentage moves to .969.
Bellamy collected 20 saves on the evening in the win.
While the departure of three players to the U.S. Women's National
Team left the Crimson with a short bench, Harvard showed it still
had a nose for the net. Just 42 seconds in the game, sophomore
Elizabeth Parker received a pass from Gina McDonald and bested
Colgate goalie Susan Allen for an early 1-0 edge. Harvard kept up
the heat through the end of the period, firing 13 shots on net to
Colgate's two, but was unable to add to its lead at the end of
one.
The second period saw the team's trade penalties twice but both
squads were solid on the penalty-kill, as each team went 0-for-5 on
the night with an extra skater. Bellamy saw her toughest tests in
the middle frame, but turned aside all 10 shots that were put on
goal. The assistant captain stayed poised through the third period,
collecting eight more saves, and Lyndsey Fry's empty-net goal with
51 seconds left off a Kaitlin Spurling pass sealed the 2-0
victory.
Up next for Harvard; a showdown with Ivy rival No. 2/2 Cornell
Saturday at Lynah Rink. Gametime is slated for 4:00 p.m.
