Winkel's Hat Trick Propels Big Green Past No. 2 Cornell
ITHACA, N.Y. -- It was a night of firsts for sophomore Ali
Winkel (Espanola, Ontario) who recorded her first career hat
trick, first career multi-point game, first career
game-winning goal and first and second career power-play goals in
the 5-4 upset victory at second-ranked Cornell on Friday.
The win improved the Big Green to 2-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 in ECAC
Hockey and 1-0-0 in the Ivy League. Cornell suffered its first
defeat and fell to 4-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 in ECAC Hockey and
2-1-0 in the Ancient Eight.
Winkel's third and final goal on the night came at the most
important time with the game tied 4-4 early in the third
period. The Big Red tied the game, 4:32 into the final frame,
on Jillian Saulnier's 10th goal of the season. With
Dartmouth on a power play, Winkel netted the game-winning goal
off assists from junior Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ontario) and
senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta).
Cornell tried to find the equalizer the remainder of the contest,
including pulling goaltender Amanda Mazzotta for the final
1:58, but the Big Green held on for the upset victory.
The night belonged to Winkel who more than doubled her career
point total on her first career hat trick. She entered the
game with three career points on one goal and two assists and
left Lynah Rink with seven career points on four goals
and three assists. It was the first hat trick by a Dartmouth
player since junior Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Quebec) had
three goals and an assists in a 6-0 victory at Brown last
January. Winkel wasn't the only Dartmouth player to record
multiple points in the victory. Senior Kelly Foley (South
Boston, Mass.) had one goal and two assists and Fischer and
Nanji each recorded two assists.
Dartmouth took the early lead in the contest off the stick of
Foley. The forward scored her fifth goal of the season off
assists from Winkel and Nanji three minutes into the game.
Winkel scored her first goal of the night with assists going
to Fischer and Foley, seven minutes later to give the Big
Green a two-goal advantage.
Cornell cut the lead to 2-1 with 2:16 remaining in the first, but
Dumais stretched the lead to 3-1, 45 seconds later on her
second goal of the season.
After the first intermission, the Big Red tied the game, tallying
two goals in the first three minutes of second. Neither team
could find the net for the rest of the stanza until Winkel
recorded her second goal of the game with 1:23 remaining in
the period to give Dartmouth a 4-3 lead. Foley and sophomore Lauren
Kelly (Milton, Ontario) recorded assists on the goal.
The game marked the first time this year Cornell was held under 49
shots in a game and the first time its opponent took more than
16 shots. The Big Red finished with 28 shots, while Dartmouth
took 26. Sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned
the victory for the Big Green, making 24 saves. Mazzotta
finished with 21 saves. Dartmouth went 2-for-5 on the power
play with Cornell finishing 1-for-4.
The last time the Big Green defeated a team ranked second in the
country was when it upended Cornell last season at Thompson
Arena, 4-2, on Feb. 18. The Big Red then knocked Dartmouth out
of the ECAC Hockey tournament and the NCAA Playoffs.
The Big Green look to build on their momentum when they travel to
Colgate on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
