Raiders Set Back by Harvard
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/11/11) – The Colgate women's hockey
team experienced a 2-0 setback to No. 10/10 Harvard on Friday night
in its fourth ECAC Hockey matchup of the season.
Freshman Susan Allen had 12 saves in the first period in her first
collegiate appearance and start for the Raiders while senior
Kimberly Sass had 15 stops in the final two frames.
Harvard jumped out to an early lead with a goal just 42 seconds
into to play to take a 1-0 lead. The Crimson continued to hold the
shooting advantage in the opening minutes until the 15th minute
when Colgate was able to find a pair of shots but both went wide.
Harvard then came close to increasing its lead when a shot on net
hit the pipe after a slight deflection from Allen to keep the score
at 1-0. Midway through the half, the Raiders began to find some
offense and then, after a holding charge on Harvard, continued to
look for a goal but could not find the back of the net. The tables
then turned with the Crimson gaining an extra skater advantage with
five minutes left in the period but Colgate was able to hold the
team scoreless. Determined to find an equalizer, the Raiders then
found an offensive surge in the final minutes and came close to
scoring when a shot from junior Brittany Phillips hit the pipe but
then rebounded to a Harvard player, who was able to knock the puck
away. The Crimson outshot Colgate 13-2 in the first period.
In the second frame Kimberly Sass stepped into the net for the
Raiders. The Crimson came out to an attacking start after a penalty
in the first 20 seconds that resulted in its second power play
advantage but was held scoreless once again. Colgate continued to
play a solid game, making some strong defensive blocks while
attacking Harvard's net aggressively. After an extra skater
advantage midway through the period, the Raiders carried their
shooting momentum into the final nine minutes of the stanza. Their
persistence resulted in a couple of close opportunities, one of
which came when sophomore Stephanie Giannopoulos intercepted a pass
in front of the Crimson's goal but could not quite get a shot off.
However, despite outshooting the Crimson 10-4 in the period,
Colgate could not find a goal.
Both teams picked up the tempo in the final period. The Raiders
continued to search diligently for an equalizer, coming close on a
couple of occasions where the puck would slide across the crease
but nobody could knock it in. In the final minutes of the game,
Colgate then opted to pull its goalie off the ice in favor of a
sixth skater. However, it was not enough to topple Harvard, which
then went on to find an empty net goal with 51 seconds left to win
the game 2-0. The Crimson had a 29-20 shooting advantage in the
game.
The Raiders will resume play tomorrow with a matchup against ECAC
Hockey rival, Dartmouth, on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. in Starr
Rink.
