Bobcats Blank Tigers
PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti
(Woodbridge, Ontario) made her league-leading fifth shutout of the
season and senior defender Melissa Perry (Chelsea, Mich.) netted
her first goal of the year, as the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey
team came away with a 1-0 shutout victory over ECAC Hockey opponent
Princeton on Friday evening at Hobey Baker Rink. The Bobcats'
sixth-consecutive victory improves their ECAC Hockey record to
8-2-1 and its overall record to 12-7-1, while the loss drops
Princeton's ECAC Hockey mark to 5-5-1 and its overall record to
6-8-1.
Perry chose a fine time to capture her first goal of the season,
netting the game-winner at the 4:48 mark into the second period of
play. The defender's slap shot from the point tipped off Princeton
senior goaltender Rachel Weber's shoulder and into the back of the
net. On the goal, junior forward Breann Frykas (East St. Paul,
Manitoba) and sophomore forward Elena Orlando (Winters, Calif.)
were each credited with an assist.
Vigilanti stood tall in net all evening, making a game-high 26
saves, including 12 saves in the third period to preserve the clean
sheet. With five shutouts on the year (and 19 in her career),
Vigilanti is now tied with Northeastern's Florence Schelling as the
NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey leader in clean sheet
performances during the 2011-12 season.
The game remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of
action, as Princeton held a slight 9-to-7 shot advantage in the
frame. Quinnipiac's best scoring opportunity came off the stick of
freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario), whose
point-blank wraparound shot was stoned by Princeton's senior
goaltender Rachel Weber. Each team was whistled for one penalty in
the period.
Perry's slap-shot from the point at the 4:48 mark into the second
period of play broke the 0-0 tie, helping the Bobcats jump out to
the 1-0 lead. A persistent forechecking effort by Quinnipiac in
Princeton's defensive zone led to a Tigers' turnover, as Orlando
gained control of the puck, passed it to Frykas, who then pushed it
up-ice towards Perry. The senior's laser was too much for Weber to
handle and skipped over the goalie's shoulder for the score for her
first tally of the season.
The Bobcats dug in defensively in the third, keeping the desperate
Tigers off the board despite Princeton's 12-to-8 shot advantage.
Princeton hampered its own efforts by committing two penalties in
the frame, at one point granting the Bobcats nearly three-straight
minutes of a power-play opportunity.
Overall, Princeton was whistled for five penalties, while
Quinnipiac was called for four infractions. Quinnipiac dominated
the faceoff battle and came away with a 30-to-20 advantage in puck
drops.
Quinnipiac returns to the ice tomorrow afternoon, on Saturday,
Dec. 10, when it hosts Princeton at High Point Solutions Arena at 4
p.m. in Hamden, Conn.
