Tigers Suffer League Setback Against Visiting Quinnipiac
PRINCETON, N.J. (12/9/11) - A goal by Quinnipiac's Melissa Perry
in the second period would be the difference as the Bobcats took a
1-0 game from the Princeton women's hockey team on Friday, Dec. 9
at Baker Rink. It was the first game of a home-and-home series
between the two travel partners.
The Tigers outshot the Bobcats 26-22 in the game but it was Elena
Orlando who set up the game winner in the middle frame. Orlando
drew the puck back along the boards to Breann Frykas at the blue
line. Frykas rifled a shot that was redirected out from by Perry to
break the stalemate at 4:48 of the second.
Quinnipiac penalty midway through the third period gave the Tigers
hope of tying the game, but Princeton itself would get back to back
infractions in the next 60 seconds, that erased the power play.
Quinnipiac got off two quick shots on the 4x3 and wouldn't get
another shot during the power play as Princeton made them work. The
Tigers did a great job of breaking up passes and sending the puck
down the length of the ice and held the Bobcats without a shot
until they were back to 5x5.
With 1:54 left on the clock Princeton called a timeout. With a face
off set to be played to the right of Quinnipiac net, Princeton
pulled senior Rachel Weber from its own goal in favor of the extra
attacker. The Tigers, however, ran out of time to score the
game-tying goal.
Weber made 21 stops in goal for Princeton, while Victoria Vigilanti
made 26 saves in her fifth shutout of the season for
Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac extends its win streak to six, with a 12-7-1 overall
record and a league leading 8-2-1 mark in the ECAC. Princeton falls
to 6-8-1 and 5-5-1 in league play.
The teams will face off again tomorrow, Dec. 10 at the TD Bank
Sports Center. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
