Reber Leads Offense as Harvard Topples New Hampshire
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's hockey team jumped
out to a 4-0 lead and cruised to a win over New Hampshire, 5-2,
Friday night at Bright Hockey Center. Samantha Reber found the back
of the net twice for the Crimson and Lyndsey Fry added a goal and
two assists to help Harvard to the non-conference victory, wrapping
up the 2011 portion of the schedule.
Harvard dominated the first period of action with 14 shots on goal,
while limiting New Hampshire to just four. Jillian Dempsey got the
scoring started early for the Crimson, 4:26 into the first frame.
The tally from in front of the net off of an assist from Fry and
Josephine Pucci was Dempsey's team-high ninth goal of the season.
Kaitlin Spurling gave Harvard a two-goal lead when her shot from
the left circle found its way past New Hampshire goalie Moe Bradley
with 1:07 remaining in the first.
The Crimson kept up the heat in the second stanza, potting two more
goals and taking a 4-1 edge into the final break. With 5:52 gone in
the frame, Josephine Pucci slid a pass to Sarah Edney at the point
and Edney fired a shot that was redirected by Reber past Bradley
for a 3-0 lead.
Harvard was back at it three minutes later as Lyndsey Fry's
impressive individual effort led to the hosts' fourth goal of the
game. Fry collected a clearance pass from Michelle Picard in her
own half of the ice, weaved into the UNH zone and waited out the
Wildcat defense for the right angle, firing true from the right
faceoff circle. Nicole Gifford got the guests on the board with her
eighth goal of the season at 17:12 of the second to cut New
Hampshire's deficit to three.
Reber scored for a second time when Fry sent the puck to the top of
the crease and the game's first-star converted past a sprawling New
Hampshire goalie with 7:46 gone in the third. New Hampshire managed
one more tally on a late 5-on-3 opportunity, but it was all it
could muster in the 5-2 defeat.
Laura Bellamy finished the game with 17 saves and improves her
record to 8-4-0 on the season. The Crimson ends its 2011 portion of
the schedule on a three-game winning streak.
Harvard's next game comes after the New Year when it takes on its
third-straight Hockey East opponent Connecticut Jan. 3, 2012. The
puck will drop in Storrs, Conn., at 7 p.m.
