Harvard Handles Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Harvard women’s hockey team
earned its first non-conference win of the season as the Crimson
downed Providence, 5-1, Thursday night at Schneider Arena. Harvard
improves to 7-4-0 on the season while Providence dips to 8-10-3 on
the year.
Both teams took the first few minutes to get their bearings, but
the Crimson was the first to string together some passes and found
its way onto the scoreboard at 13:44. Samantha Reber collected the
puck in her own zone and fed Jillian Dempsey, who bolted through
neutral ice, dishing the puck to Lyndsey Fry at the last second.
Fry put a shot on Providence goalie Genevieve Lacasse who made the
initial save, but Dempsey was there to deposit the rebound on a
backhand for a 1-0 lead.
Back-to-back Harvard penalties put the Crimson penalty kill to the
test early, but Harvard was steady on the first kill and took to
the offensive the next time around. A Providence player wound up
for a slapshot from the blue line and Dempsey blocked the blast at
point-blank range. The junior jumped on the ricochet and sped down
the ice, besting Lacasse with another backhand for Harvard’s
first shorthanded score of the season at 8:15.
Elizabeth Parker got on the scoresheet just before the end of the
period, puching home a short-range look for her fourth goal of the
season, giving Harvard a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.
Margaret Chute earned an assist on the play for her first point of
the season, giving every Harvard player that has seen the ice at
least one point this year.
Providence came out of the break with a chip on its shoulder and
found its first score just 18 seconds into the second. Harvard has
a response for the Friars’ goal, tacking on a fourth tally
with 3:32 gone in the frame. After an offensive flurry in the Friar
zone, Kalley Armstrong found the puck on her stick and her slapper
tipped off Lacasse’s glove and trickled into the net for
Harvard’s second unassisted score of the night. Harvard
successfully killed a third penalty in the final minutes of the
second and took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
Another goal was scored right out of an intermission, but this
time it was Harvard padding its lead. Sarah Edney dished a pass to
Dempsey and after Dempsey couldn’t get it past Lacasse, Fry
lifted it past to push the Crimson lead to 5-1. Harvard continued
to kill penalties in the back half of the period and the final
buzzer sounded with the score 5-1 Harvard.
Harvard is back on the ice tomorrow night as it squares off
against its second Hockey East opponent in as many days, facing New
Hampshire at Bright Hockey Center in a 7 p.m. game.
