Colgate Suffers Loss at Northeastern
BOSTON, Mass. (10/8/11) – The Colgate women's hockey team
suffered its second set back of the season on Saturday afternoon,
when it fell to Northeastern 5-0 on the road.
Senior goaltender Kimberly Sass had yet another impressive showing
this weekend, with a total of 28 saves in the game, 14 of which
were in the second period.
The Huskies got out on top early with a goal at the 2:09 mark to
take a 1-0 lead. As the period progressed, Northeastern continued
to hold a shooting advantage, finding a second goal nine minutes
later to increase its lead to 2-0, which it held till the end of
the first 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, Colgate (0-2) picked up its pace, playing
some tough defense and generating some offense in an attempt to
relieve some of the pressure on net. Despite Northeastern taking 15
shots in the period, the Raiders were able to limit their opponent
to only one goal in the second frame while taking nine shots on the
Huskies' net.
The third period was a very physical one that resulted in eight
penalties being called over the 20 minutes of play. Colgate played
yet another strong defensive period, dropping down to a 5-on-3
disadvantage at one point, but was able to hold Northeastern off
during that time. However, despite all their efforts, the Huskies
were able to find two late goals, one of which was on a power play,
to eventually win the game 5-0.
The Raiders were outshot 43-19. Northeastern's Florence Schelling
had 19 saves in the game.
Colgate will resume play next weekend with a two-game set against
Lindenwood on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15 both at 3 p.m.
in Starr Rink.
