Bears Offense in High Gear at Sacred Heart
Fairfield, Conn. – Brown traveled to the Wonderland of Ice
on Wednesday night to take on Sacred Heart and he Bears equaled
their offensive output in their season-opener against the Pioneers,
taking a 10-0 win against SHU. The Bears will now be on a
near-month break for exams and the holiday, resuming play on
January 4, at Yale.
Senior forward Vika Mykolenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) led the way for
the Bears with a five-point day with two goals and three assists.
Sophomore forward Emilie Dolan (Montreal West, Quebec) was second
on the team with three points and two goals.
The Bears split the game in net between sophomore Aubree Moore
(Bowie, Md.), who started and picked up the win, and junior Katie
Jamieson (Waterloo, Ontario). Moore totaled nine saves, while
Jamieson tallied eight stops.
Brown got behind the eight-ball early in the first period, with a
hooking call which put the Pioneers on the power play, but the
Bears penalty kill worked to perfection before rookie Brittany
Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.) was able to intercept a pass at center
ice, work her way into the Sacred Heart zone and go low past
Pioneer goalie Alexis Schutt for a short-handed goal and 1-0 Bruno
lead.
The Bears picked up their second goal of the evening with just
under three minutes to play in the period. Senior Jacquie Pierri
(Montclair, N.J.) passed to sophomore Jennifer Nedow (Brockville,
Ontario) just below the blue line, who then fired on net, but it
was junior Alena Polenska (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) who was able
to redirect the shot and put Brown up 2-0.
Brown made it three goals in the period when Mykolenko tallied the
score with just 38 seconds left to play. Sophomore defender Kelly
Kittredge (Mahwah, N.J.) and freshman Sarah Robson (Mississauga,
Ontario) picked up assists on the play.
With seven minutes into the second period, Kittredge blasted one
in towards the goal, which was redirected toward the stick-side of
Schutt. From there, sophomore Dolan was able to one-time it,
putting the Bears up 4-0.
Brown went up 5-0 with 4:50 left in the second period as senior
co-captain Katelyn Landry (Belmont, Mass.) and Mykolenko combined
for a highlight reel goal. Landry controlled the puck deep in the
Pioneer zone and executed the give-and-go perfectly, passing over
and getting it right back, putting it in for her team-leading
seventh goal of the season.
Just 36 seconds later, Brown tallied another as rookie defender
Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) took the assists from junior
Laurie Jolin (Lachine, Quebec) and Mykolenko, and blasted it past
Schutt for a 6-0 Bears lead.
With a delayed penalty coming and under 25 seconds to play at the
end of the second, Landry set up Pierri for the riffle from the
right face-off circle and the senior buried it, putting the Bears
up 7-0.
Brown tallied two goals in 20 seconds in the third as Dolan
redirected the slapshot from Nedow for goal number eight, and then
Mykolenko found the back of the net for the second time for a 9-0
Bears lead.
Rookie Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) got her first goal of the
night, and of the season, at 9:25 in the third, putting the Bears
up 10-0, the same score in which they won their season-opener
against the Pioneers at Meehan Auditorium.
