HAMDEN, Conn. – Despite a goal and an assist from junior forward Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.), the No. 9 ranked Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team fell to non-conference opponent Maine, 4-3, on Friday evening at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. The loss drops Quinnipiac’s record to 1-2 on the season, while Maine improves to 3-0.
 
Quinnipiac wasted no time in scoring its first goal of the contest, as senior defender Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.) slapped home a power-play goal just 18 seconds into the first period of play. The Bobcats had gained the extra skater advantage nine seconds into the frame on a Maine checking penalty, won the ensuing face-off, and swung the puck to the assistant captain who buried her first goal of the year. Sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) were each credited with an assist on the score.
 
The Bobcats added to their lead in the final seconds of the first period, as senior Chelsea Illchuk (Brandon, Manitoba) netted her first goal of the year with 11 ticks remaining on the clock. Illchuk was in the perfect position to collect the rebound off a shot from Lyons, who earned her first assist of the season on the score. Sophomore Elena Orlando (Chico, Calif.) was also credited with her first assist of the season on the goal.
 
The Bobcats played excellent on the defensive end in the frame as well, allowing only four shots on net through the first 20 minutes of play. Overall, Quinnipiac outshot Maine in the contest, 35-to-28.
 
Lyons extended the Bobcats’ lead to 3-0 on an unassisted score, netting another early tally for Quinnipiac at the 41 second mark into the second frame. Lyons controlled the puck behind the net before drifting towards the bottom of the face-off circle where she remained unmarked. The junior slipped by a quick shot through the pads of Maine’s junior goaltender Brittany Ott for her first score of the year.
 
The Black Bears began their comeback with a goal at the 7:06 mark into the second period, as sophomore forward Kayla Kaluzny scored her first of two goals in the game off an assist from sophomore forward Brianne Kilgour. Maine scored its second goal of the period just over six minutes later to bring the score to 3-2, as junior forward Danielle Ward found the back of the net for her third tally of the year. Senior forward Myriam Croussette was credited with her third assist.
 
Maine found the equalizer just 30 seconds into the final frame, as Kaluzny tied the score at three apiece on her second goal of the game. Freshman Jennifer More and junior defender Chloe Tinkler each earned an assist on the goal.
 
The Black Bears added its fourth-straight goal under two-minutes later, taking the 4-3 lead, at the 2:17 mark into the third period. Sophomore Missy Denk scored the game-winner after receiving a pass from Kilgour.
 
Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) made 24 saves in net for Quinnipiac, while her counterpart Ott turned away 32 shots for Maine.
 
Quinnipiac capitalized on one of its three power-play opportunities and held the Black Bears scoreless during its lone power-play on the evening.
 
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow afternoon on Saturday, Oct. 9 when they host Maine at 1 p.m.
