Raiders Fall On Road at New Hampshire
DURHAM, N.H. (10/7/11) – The Colgate women's hockey team
suffered its first set back when it fell to New Hampshire 3-0 in
its season opener on Friday night.
Senior goaltender Kimberly Sass had a game-high 26 saves, 13 of
which were in the second period.
New Hampshire came out to an explosive start in the first 20
minutes of play, forcing Sass to make a series of saves early in
the game. As the period progressed, the Raiders were able to ignite
their offense, taking several shots of their own but could not find
the net. Both teams continued to play hard in search of the first
goal but at the end of the first frame, the game remained
scoreless.
The second period started off similar to the first, with the
Wildcats taking a flurry of shots on net but could not get past
Sass who made one impressive save after another. The pressure soon
gave way to an opening goal for New Hampshire at the 3:16 mark to
take a 1-0 lead. The teams continued to battle it out, creating
opportunities on both ends of the ice. However, four minutes later,
the Wildcats were able to find a power play goal to extend their
lead to two goals. Determined to find a goal, Colgate began to
attack New Hampshire's net more aggressively, resulting in a few
power play opportunities, but despite their hard work, the score
remained 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats going into the third
frame.
New Hampshire then went on to score a third goal in a physical
third period to win the game 3-0.
Colgate will resume play on Saturday, Oct. 8 when it travels to
Northeastern for a matchup at 3 p.m.
