Colgate Drops Decision to Niagara
NIAGARA, UNIV., N.Y. (11/5/11) – The Colgate women's
hockey team fell to Niagara in its second game of the set on
Saturday afternoon 1-0 at Dwyer Arena, allowing the Purple Eagles
to sweep the two-game set after also wining Friday's competition
2-1.
Senior Kimberly Sass had 27 saves in the game, 15 of which were in
the second frame.
The game started off even between the two teams in the opening
minutes of the first period until a penalty on Colgate (4-5-1,
1-1-1 ECAC Hockey) at the 3:55 mark gave the Purple Eagles a series
of shots on net during their power play advantage. After denying
Niagara a goal in its two-minute advantage, the Raiders then went
on an offensive surge but could not find the back of net. Colgate
then continued to play a tough game, holding the Purple Eagles
scoreless over a pair of extra skater advantages later in the
period to end the period with the score at 0-0.
The second frame was similar to the first, with both teams coming
into the next 20 minutes looking for the opening goal. After an
even period in which the teams both saw action on both ends of the
ice and had one power play advantage each, it was clear that the
scoreless game would have to be settled in the final period or head
into overtime.
The teams continued to battle it out on the ice in the final 20
minutes of play, taking 17 shots between them in search of a goal.
However, after its fourth power play advantage of the game at the
6:49 mark, Niagara was able to carry its shooting momentum and find
the back of the net at the 10:08 mark to take a 1-0 lead and
eventually win the game.
The Raiders will return to action next weekend with a pair of ECAC
Hockey matchups at Starr Rink. The team will first play Harvard on
Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. before taking on Dartmouth on Saturday,
Nov. 12 at 4 p.m.
