Clarkson Gets Back on Track with Win at Rensselaer
The Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team bounced back
from an ugly loss on Friday night to defeat Rensselaer 2-1 on the
road on Saturday afternoon in ECAC Hockey action at Houston Field
House in Troy, NY.
The Golden Knights, who lost at Union 2-1 on Friday, snapped a
three-game winless stretch (0-2-1), to improve their record to
5-3-4 overall and to 1-2-1 in the conference. Clarkson returns to
Cheel Arena next weekend hosting Quinnipiac and Princeton.
After a scoreless first period at RPI, Clarkson built a 2-0 lead
midway through the third stanza. Junior Danielle Skirrow (Trenton,
ONT) opened the scoring with her fifth goal of the season at 2:42
of the middle frame. Sophomore Shelby Nisbet (Wiseton, SASK)
set up the goal with her first assist of the season.
Sophomore defenseman Vanessa Plante (Riviere-du-Loup, QUE) came
through with the deciding score on her first career goal at 13:56
of the final period, finishing off assists from classmate Carly
Mercer (Exeter, ONT) and senior Kali Gillanders (Kyle, SASK).
The Engineers cut the Clarkson lead to one with a power-play goal
by Laura Guillemette at 15:01 on their only shot of the period. The
Knights’ defense shut down RPI the rest of the way as the
Green and Gold earned their third straight victory over the
Engineers.
Clarkson outshot RPI by a 2-to-1 margin, 28-to-14, including 20-6
over the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted 13 saves
The Knights were 0-of-2 on the power play, while the Engineers went
1-of-4 with the man-advantage.
