Ladiges Stops 41, but Bulldogs Fall at Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. – It was a battle of goalies Friday night at
Quinnipiac’s TD Bank Sports Center, and Yale senior Genny
Ladiges had the edge in saves with 41. But it was
Quinnipiac’s Victoria Vigilanti who came away with the win
thanks to a lopsided shot total advantage for the Bobcats. QU
outshot Yale 44-13, putting Ladiges and the Bulldogs on the short
end of a 3-0 final score.
The game marked a big step forward for Yale defensively, as the
Bulldogs continue to adjust to life without record-setting
goaltender Jackee Snikeris ’11. Ladiges’ 41 stops were
a season high for her.
“This is what we’ve been waiting for,” said Yale
head coach Joakim Flygh. “We’ve been spoiled with great
goaltending the last few years, and Genny had a great game today.
We still have a lot more work to do offensively, but if we can play
this hard defensively good things will happen.”
Quinnipiac (4-5-0, 3-0-0 ECAC Hockey) had multiple quality chances
in the first period, starting right after the Bobcats killed off
the first penalty of the game. At the nine-minute mark, forward
Amanda Colin set up forward Brittany Lyons right in front of the
goal but Ladiges reacted quickly to make a kick save. She made a
similarly quick reaction with three minutes left in the period when
Lyons stole the puck behind the net and tried a wraparound that was
stuffed by Ladiges.
But there was one shot that got by Ladiges, and it came in
frustrating fashion. She got a piece of a shot from inside the blue
line by defenseman Jordan Elkins but the puck slipped behind her
and, before she could re-locate it, it trickled over the goal line
to put QU up 1-0 at 13:51.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were unable to generate chances at the
other end of the ice in the first. There were no threats to
Vigilanti until freshman forward Lynn Kennedy freed herself up in
front to put one on net with five minutes left in the period.
Sophomore forward Jackie Raines also got off a shot in the final
minute after stealing the puck in the QU zone. Vigilanti finished
the period with two saves.
The Bobcats struck again 44 seconds into the second on a delayed
penalty, with defenseman Regan Boulton knocking in a rebound to
make it 2-0 Quinnipiac.
Yale got some momentum by fighting through a QU 5-on-3 for more
than a minute shortly after the Boulton goal. Junior defenseman
Jamie Gray, senior forward Aleca Hughes and junior
forward/defenseman Alyssa Zupon came out for the kill, which got
off to a good start when Hughes cleared the puck all the way down
to the other end of the ice off the faceoff. After a pair of saves
by Ladiges, Hughes and Zupon both had blocks in front. After
another Ladiges save the puck was loose in front of the net for
several anxious moments before Gray was able to grab it and get it
away from the crease.
Quinnipiac was able to increase its lead at the 9:03 mark, however,
on a goal by Colin off a rebound. That made the third period an
uphill climb for the Bulldogs, who did manage to have their best
period in terms of shots (eight). A sprawled-out Vigilanti left a
rebound in front with eight minutes to play, but sophomore forward
Ashley Dunbar’s momentum carried her past the puck before she
had the chance to gather it in. Raines sent a backhander just over
the crossbar with 3:30 left, and after that a penalty on the
Bulldogs ended any chance of Yale gaining offensive momentum.
Vigilanti finished with 13 saves for the shutout.
“I told the kids they made a heck of an effort,” Flygh
said. “That third period was the best effort of the
year.”
Yale (0-6-0, 0-3-0 ECAC Hockey) plays at Princeton Saturday at 4
