Rattray Records Hat Trick in Clarkson's Win over RPI
Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT)
scored two of her three goals in a five-goal first period as the
Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team routed Rensselaer
10-0 in ECAC Hockey action Friday night at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights claimed their fourth consecutive win over the
Engineers to improve to 9-4-4 overall and 5-3-1 in conference
games, while the Engineers fell to 4-11-4 and 1-4-2. Clarkson looks
to add to its two-game winning streak against Union College on
Saturday.
Clarkson’s 10 goals were the second most in team history,
and the most in 280 games, trailing only an 11-0 shutout against
Sacred Heart in 2004, the program’s first season as a
Division I program.
In the opening period, the puck seemed to be set exclusively in
the RPI defensive end, though Clarkson didn’t get many good
scoring chances in the first eight minutes. That would change
considerably in the next 12 minutes as Clarkson poured on the
offense en route to five goals in the first frame. Senior Juana
Baribeau (Amos, QUE) started things off at 9:03 when she skated in
on the right circle and got a shot off that was initially stopped
by Rensselaer goalkeeper Kelly O’Brien. However, the rebound
bounced out softly to Baribeau’s stick and she slid the puck
over the end line for the unassisted marker. The goal was her
fourth of the season and the 50th of her career.
Clarkson received its second goal of the contest on one of the
niftier players of the season when Jamie Lee Rattray picked up the
puck near center ice and skated in against a pair of defenders. Her
individual effort wowed those in attendance as she controlled the
puck, slipping it ahead and put a pair of moves on O’Brien
before lifting it top shelf at 13:31, her seventh score of the
season. Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) was awarded an assist on the
goal.
Just a few minutes later, Rattray extended Clarkson’s lead
to 3-0 as she one-timed the puck in on the stick side of
O’Brien. Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) sent a pass over to
Styner near the boards, and Styner ripped a pass through the slot
to Rattray, who beat the defender covering her by ticking the puck
into open net at 15:29.
The scoring barrage continued just a minute later as fans were
just sitting back down after celebrating the third goal as Vanessa
Gagnon (St. Constant, QUE) deflected the puck past O’Brien
with assists going to Taylor Gedig (Kelowna, BC) and Danielle
Skirrow (Trenton, ONT).
RPI looked to change its fortunes by pulling O’Brien, but
the Engineers were whistled for the first penalty of the contest
and Clarkson quickly took advantage as senior Katelyn Ptolemy
(Dinsmore, SASK) scored her first goal of the season. Gabrielle
Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) and Danielle Boudreau (Whitby, ONT)
worked the puck around to Ptolemy who sniped a shot in from the
blueline for a power-play goal at 18:47 and a 5-0 advantage.
The scoring slowed only slightly in the second period for Clarkson
as the Knights tallied two more times to take a 7-0 advantage.
Freshman Jennifer Shields (Ingersoll, ONT) stole a pass and rifled
a shot from the left circle near the blue line and Danielle Skirrow
alertly redirected the shot through a small gap at the near post
for a score at 8:13. The scoring was quiet for the next 10 minutes,
but Rattray finished off her hat trick with another impressive
individual effort coming in on the far side of the ice and flipping
the puck past O’Brien with just under a minute to go in the
second period.
The third period saw RPI called on a pair of penalties, the second
of which gave Clarkson its eight goal of the contest. Just 40
seconds into the power play, at 4:06 in the third, Katelyn Ptolemy
took a shot from the blue line where she had scored earlier in the
game, but this time the puck was deflected by freshman Christine
Lambert (Thetford, ME) for her fourth goal of the season. Both
teams changed goalies before the drop of the next puck with Brianna
Piper replacing O’Brien for the second time in the contest
and Clarkson freshman Emily Horn (Hamilton, ONT) seeing her first
action of the season.
Clarkson closed out the contest with two more goals in the final
10 minutes, as Juana Baribeau scored a short-handed marker with
10:03 remaining, pushing the senior to within one point of the
100-point plateau. In the waning moments of the game, Brittany
Styner joined the goal-scoring brigade, adding her first of the
game and second of the season as she sniped a shot from just inside
the circle.
Clarkson finished the game with a 37-11 edge in shots. Howe and
Horn combined for 11 saves in the shutout, while O’Brien and
Piper finished with 27 saves total.
