Bobcats Fall in Overtime to Maine
HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 9 Quinnipiac women’s ice
hockey team was defeated by Maine in overtime, 5-4, on Saturday
afternoon at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports
Center. Quinnipiac falls to 1-3-0 on the season, while Maine
maintains a perfect 4-0-0.
Sophomore Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and junior Brittany
Lyons (Canton, Mass.) led the offensive attack for Quinnipiac, as
each collected a goal and two assists in the game. Freshman Nicole
Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) and senior Kate Wheeler (Oakville,
Ontario) each added their first goals of the season, while freshman
Breanne Frykas (East St. Paul, Manitoba) and senior Melissa Perry
(Chelsea, Mich.) both earned their first helpers on the year.
Maine’s overtime goal, scored by junior Danielle Ward at the
2:32 mark into the first overtime period, capped off her two-goal
performance afternoon. Senior Myriam Croussette, sophomore Missy
Denk and junior Brittany Dougherty each scored for the Black Bears,
as they finished the game with four unanswered goals.
Babstock got the Bobcats on the board just under three minutes into
the first period of play, scoring her first goal of the season off
assists from Lyons and Kosta. The Black Bears tied the score at one
apiece later in the period, as Croussette tallied a power-play goal
at the 12:06 mark in the stanza. Kosta quickly regained the lead
for Quinnipiac, scoring a power-play goal 40 seconds later to bring
the score to 2-1. Babstock and Lyons were each credited with an
assist on the score.
Quinnipiac continued pressing up front, as a power-play goal by
Wheeler at the 4:15 mark into the second period increased
Quinnipiac’s lead, 3-1. Frykas and Perry each earned an
assist on the score. Lyons’ goal over two minutes later at
the 6:18 mark into the second period extended the Bobcats’
lead to 4-1. Following a shot by junior Regan Boulton (Brandon,
Manitoba), Lyons recovered the rebound and wristed in the puck past
Maine’s junior goaltender Kylie Smith.
The Black Bears began its comeback in the 17th minute of the second
period, as Denk’s power-play goal, coming off an assist from
freshman Jennifer More, brought the score to 4-2 heading into the
third period. Ward tightened the score, 4-3, at the 2:24 mark in
the third stanza on an unassisted score, before Dougherty netted
the game-tying goal with exactly 30 seconds remaining in
regulation. Dougherty’s goal occurred just two seconds after
Smith exited and an extra skater emerged for the Black Bears,
sending the teams into their first respective overtime games of the
season. Ward’s game-winning goal at the 2:32 mark, coming off
an assist from senior Dawn Sullivan, gave the Black Bears the
victory and the two-game weekend series sweep.
Both teams were whistled for six penalties in the contest, while
each side was 2-for-6 on its power-play opportunities.
Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) made 23
saves in net for Quinnipiac. Maine’s starting goaltender
junior Brittany Ott made two saves before being pulled for junior
Kylie Sullivan, who turned away 18 shots in the game. Maine held a
slight shot advantage, 28-to-24.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they travel
to play Northeastern at 2 p.m.
