Weekly Release: Overtime Excitement
ALBANY, N.Y. - Dartmouth won two thrilling overtime games last
weekend and burst onto the national spotlight. Now winners of
five-of-six games, Dartmouth is ranked in the national polls (No.
9/10) for the first time this season. On Friday defender
Sasha Nanji scored all of the Big Green's goals, and recorded her
first career hat trick, as Dartmouth edged Princeton, 3-2 in
overtime. The Big Green outshot the Tigers, 29-23 in the
contest, and committed less penalties, 3-4. Freshman Lindsay
Holdcroft earned the victory in net for Dartmouth, making 21
saves. On the heels of a hat trick and game-winning goal
against Princeton Friday, sophomore Sasha Nanji scored two more
points and had the overtime game-winning goal in a 4-3 victory at
Quinnipiac Saturday. The defenseman's goal occurred 1:04 into
overtime off assists from Camille Dumais and Amanda Trunzo.
For Trunzo, who scored a goal earlier in the contest, it marked her
100th career point, becoming the 32nd player in the history of the
program to reach the plateau. Bobcats freshman forward Kelly
Babstock scored her second hat trick in as many day in the
loss.
St. Lawrence hosted No. 6 Boston College in a two game set at
Appleton Arena last weekend. The Saints erupted for seven
goals in handing the Eagles their first loss of the season,
7-3. Junior Vanessa Emond and sophomore Brooke Fernandez each
scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Michelle Ng chipped in with
three assists for the Saints. St. Lawrence closed with a
32-28 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goaltender Caitlyn
Lahonen earned the win with a 25-save performance. The two
teams met again the following day and played to a hard fought, 1-1
overtime tie. Saints sophomore forward Kayla Sullivan netted
a second period goal to tie the game with 15 seconds remaining on
the clock. Neither team could break the tie the rest of the
way, although both created good opportunities. Eagles
netminder Kiera Kingston finished with 28 saves including five in
overtime, while Maxie Weisz made 24 saves for the Saints, 10 of
them coming in the third period.
Brown picked-up three points in the ECAC Hockey standings earning a
1-1 overtime tie with Union Friday and blanking Rensselaer, 1-0 the
following afternoon. Stefanie Thomson scored on the
power-play in the first period to give the Dutchwomen the early
lead, but the host Bears tied the game in the second stanza on a
goal by Kelly Griffin. Kate Gallagher started in goal for the
Dutchwomen and made 16 saves. Aubree Moore made 32 saves for
the Bears. Union led in shots in the game 33-17. The
Bears would continue their solid defensive play the following day,
as netminder Katie Jamieson turned away 37 shots and Jessica Hoyle
scored with just over three minutes to play to give the Bears their
first ECAC Hockey victory this season with a 1-0 win over the
Engineers. Rensselaer finished with a 37-11 shot advantage in
the contest.
Rensselaer did manage to come away with two League points on the
road over the weekend as freshman Jordan Smelker notched her first
career hat trick to lead Rensselaer to a 4-1 victory at Yale Friday
evening in front of a record 1,066 fans at Ingalls Rink. The
Bulldogs paid tribute to center Mandi Schwartz and her battle with
cancer with a "White Out for Mandi" with the event raising over
$9,000.
Yale bounced back the following afternoon as four different players
scored goals to beat Union, 4-1, earning the first career win for
new head coach Joakim Flygh. Senior forward Bray Ketchum,
sophomore forward Danielle Moncion, freshman forward Jackie Raines
and sophomore defenseman Tara Tomimoto had goals, and junior
goaltender Genny Ladiges made 24 saves for the win. Stefanie
Thomson scored for the second straight game and Kate Gallagher made
27 saves in goal for the Dutchwomen.
Quinnipiac would earn two League points over the weekend, as the
Bobcats bettered Harvard, 4-1 at TD Bank Sports Center
Friday. Freshman forward Kelly Babstock recorded her
first-career hat trick in leading the Bobcats offense.
Sophomore netminder Victoria Vigilanti turned away 27 shots on the
evening for the win, while her counterparts Laura Bellamy and
Lauren Joarnt each made 19 and two saves, respectively.
Harvard and Princeton skated to a 2-2 tie Friday evening each
earning one point in League play. The game went back and
forth all evening until Katharine Chute leveled the score at two
goals apiece with under give minutes remaining in the third
period. Kelly Cooke and Corey Stearns scored goals and Rachel
Weber made 30 saves for the Tigers. Harvard outshot Princeton
32-22 in the game and its netminder Lauren Joarnt made 20
stops.
In a rematch of last weekend’s action visiting Syracuse
stopped Clarkson’s three-game winning streak, 3-1 in
non-conference action at Cheel Arena Friday afternoon. Three
different players scored for the Orange and Jenesica Drinkwater
posted 36 saves as Syracuse snapped a three-game losing skid.
Clarkson outshot Syracuse 37-21, but struggled on the power-play
going 0-of-7 with the man-advantage. The Orange were 0-of-6
on the power-play.
Senior goaltender Lisa Plenderleith made 28 saves but it wasn't
enough as the Colgate fell to Niagara 2-1 in the first of a
two-game set Friday afternoon at Starr Rink. Colgate finished
1-for-4 on the power-play while Niagara went 0-for-4. The
Raiders would earn a split with the Purple Eagles by handing their
visitors a 4-1 defeat for their fourth win of the season.
Sophomore Brittany Phillips had one goal and one assist for the
Raiders while her classmates Jordan Brickner and Jessica Hootz had
two assists apiece. The Raiders outshot the Purple Eagles
32-15. Junior Kimberly Sass had 14 saves for the win.
