League Announces Women's Coaches' Award Finalists
ALBANY, N.Y. -- ECAC Hockey today announced the finalists for
the 2011 Women’s Coach-of-the-Year Award. Cornell’s
Doug Derraugh, Mark Hudak of Dartmouth, and Rick Seeley, Quinnipiac
have each been named finalists for the honor by their peers.
The reigning AWCHA Coach of the Year, Doug Derraugh guided Cornell
to its second consecutive ECAC Hockey regular-season title this
season. The Big Red have been a top-10 team in the national polls
throughout the season, including their first-ever No. 1 ranking in
the program’s history. Under Derraugh, the 2010-11 Cornell
Big Red led ECAC Hockey in scoring offense (4.50 G/GM), scoring
defense (0.91 G/GM), power-play success rate (26.8%), and
penalty-kill (94.8%). Derraugh has turned around the Big Red
program and made it one of the nation’s elite over the last
few seasons. He has nudged ahead of the .500 mark for his career
(84-83-16) after 13 wins his first two seasons in Ithaca.
After a down 2009-10 season, head coach Mark Hudak brought the
Dartmouth women's hockey team back into contention for a top spot
in ECAC Hockey and a chance for another NCAA tournament run during
the 2010-11 campaign. The Big Green have already won seven more
games this season than they did all of last year. On the way, Hudak
picked up his 150th career coaching victory and his 100th ECAC
Hockey win in only his eighth season as a head coach. For his
career he is 157-70-20 overall and 107-50-14 in the conference. In
his eight seasons, Hudak has guided the Big Green to the NCAA
tournament five times, including two trips to the Frozen Four. This
season he has also been an assistant coach on the U.S. Women's
National Team that finished second at the Four Nations Cup in
November and will be competing in the World Championships in
April.
Having just completed his third regular-season behind the
Quinnipiac bench the reigning ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year Rick
Seeley guided the Bobcats to a second consecutive record setting
season. The Bobcats once again set records for single-season wins
with 20 overall and 12 in conference. Seeley’s Bobcats
finished the 2010-11 in the fifth spot (12-9-1, 20-11-3), securing
the program’s second-ever trip to the league’s
postseason tournament. The Bobcats finished fourth in ECAC Hockey
scoring offense (2.64 G/GM) and tied for third in scoring defense
(1.95 G/GM) in 22 league contests. Seeley led the Bobcats to their
second-ever Nutmeg Classic tournament championship in November with
a 2-1 win over Yale. Individually, Seeley assumes leadership of his
talented freshman forward Kelly Babstock, who has broken the
program’s single season goals, assists and points records.
Seeley has compiled a 42-47-16 record at Quinnipiac. His
record the past two seasons is an impressive 39-21-11.
