Weekend Update: Saints Bring Down Lakers
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The last Friday prior to the
holiday break witnessed ECAC Hockey teams produce a record of 2-1-1
in its four non-league games. St. Lawrence upset
nationally-ranked Mercyhurst, 6-2; Princeton handled visiting
Syracuse, 4-2; Union earned a road overtime tie at Maine, 2-2; and
Harvard was bettered by Boston University, 5-3.
At St. Lawrence 6, No. 3/3 Mercyhurst 2: St.
Lawrence scored three goals in a span of 2:49 in the first period
and went on a five-goal run through the first 25 minutes of play en
route to an impressive 6-2 upset of nationally-ranked Mercyhurst
Friday night at Appleton Arena. Junior Vanessa Emond had four
points on a pair of goals and two assists to lead the Saints’
offense. St. Lawrence, winners of five of its last six games,
improves to 9-7-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Lakers saw
their five-game win streak come to an end and fall to 12-3-0 on the
year. The six goals scored on Mercyhurst marked the most
allowed to an opponent since a 7-3 setback to Providence Jan. 12,
2008. St. Lawrence closed with a 30-28 advantage in shots on
goal, and was 2-of-9 on the power-play. Mercyhurst converted
one of its four opportunities with the man-advantage. Maxie
Weisz finished with 26 saves to earn the victory.
Union 2 at Maine 2 (ot): Rookie Maddy Norton
scored her first career goal early in the third period as the
Dutchwomen would take the lead just 17 seconds into the third
period. Norton stole the puck in the Maine zone and slipped a
shot into the back of the Black Bears net for her first career
goal, but host Maine later tied the game to send it into overtime
and the teams settled for a 2-2 tie Friday afternoon at Alfond
Arena. Maine led in shots 27-17. Union held a 8-7
advantage in the third period. Alana Marcinko got the start
in goal and made 25 saves for Union. Candice Currier had 15
saves for the Black Bears. The Black Bears see their record
move to 7-7-4 on the season while Union now stands at 1-13-3.
The Black Bears outshot Union by a 27-17 margin and were 1-7 on the
power-play. Maine has now scored a power-play goal in its
last six games. Maine killed off all five Union power-play
opportunities.
At Princeton 4, Syracuse 2: Princeton won
its second straight game with a 4-2 triumph over Syracuse Friday
afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Freshman forward Sally Butler
scored twice as Princeton built a 4-0 lead before the Orange scored
twice late in the third period. Syracuse added the game's
final two goals on the power-play as senior forward Julie Rising
scored twice. She put in the rebound of a blocked shot at
10:39 and deflected a point shot at 13:21. Tigers’
forwards Olivia Mucha (2a) and Denna Laing (1g, 1a) were
multiple-point scorers for the winners. Princeton outshot
Syracuse 26-25 in the win. Rachel Weber made 23 saves in the
win, while Jenesica Drinkwater had 22 saves in the loss.
No. 4/5 Boston University 5 at Harvard 3:
Three Terriers, Jenelle Kohanchuk (3a), Jenn Wakefield (1g, 2a) and
Marie-Philip Poulin (2g), recorded multiple-point nights to lead
nationally-ranked Boston University to a 5-3 non-conference victory
over Harvard at Bright Hockey Center Friday night. Harvard
spotted Boston University a 2-0 lead then came roaring back to tie
the game at 2-2, only to see the Terriers tally two goal in the
span of 30 seconds regaining the lead. BU now has won six
straight games. Senior forward Liza Ryabkina netted two goals
on the night for the Crimson. Both Harvard and BU were
1-for-3 with the player advantage. Harvard outshot the
Terriers, 30-29 on the evening.
