Weekend Update: Road Warriors

ALBANY, N.Y. -- With ECAC Hockey now in full swing, Friday night’s games witnessed road teams coming out on top in four out of the five games involving the League’s women’s teams.  Last night’s games also produced the highest goal output, six by Dartmouth, from a single team in League play this season and saw Cornell flex its muscles in a battle of top 10 ten teams, earning a 3-0 shutout win over visiting Harvard. 

At No. 2/2 Cornell 3, No. 10/10 Harvard 0:  The Big Red rebounded from a 4-3 overtime loss to No. 4/4 Mercyhurst this past week by blanking No. 10/10 Harvard, 3-0 Friday evening at Lynah Rink.  Senior forward Hayley Hughes had two goals and one assist and junior netminder Amanda Mazzotta recorded her 13th career shutout for Cornell.  Both of Hughes’ goals were of the power-play variety.  Harvard evens its overall and conference records at 1-1-1 while the Big Red improves to 5-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in ECAC Hockey action.  Mazzotta ended the game with 24 saves and her first shutout of the season while sophomore Laura Bellamy had a season-high 26 saves for Harvard.

Dartmouth 6 at Colgate 2:  Dartmouth remained undefeated on the young season after winning its first road game at Colgate Friday. The Big Green used six goals by six different players to achieve the 6-2 victory.  Dartmouth improves to 3-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in ECAC  Hockey play.  The Raiders fall to 3-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.  Sophomore defender Sasha Nanji netted a goal in the first 13 seconds of the game to spark the Big Green.  Senior Lisa Plenderleith made 24 saves for Colgate, while freshman Lindsay Holdcroft had 17 for the Big Green.  Dartmouth has six players record multiple point nights with forward Kelly Foley leading the way with three points on one goal and two assists.

Clarkson 3 at Syracuse 2:  In its first-ever meeting with Syracuse, three different Golden Knights scored goals and senior goaltender Lauren Dahm played a solid game in goal as Clarkson edged the Orange, 3-2 in Central New York Friday night.  Syracuse out shot Clarkson 27-24.  Dahm made 25 saves, including 10 in a scoreless first period, while her counterpart freshman Kallie Billadeau earned her fifth start in goal and turned away 21 shots.  Both teams were 1-of-4 on the power-play.

Princeton 2 at Rensselaer 1:  The Tigers held on to an early lead to edge the Engineers, 2-1 at Houston Field House Friday night.  Freshmen Denna Laing and Sally Butler each scored their second goals of the season to lead Princeton.  Princeton netminder sophomore Cassie Seguin made 21 saves for the win while senior netminder Sonja van der Bliek stopped 15 shots in the loss.  Freshman forward Jordan Smelker tallied the lone goal on the evening for Rensselaer.

Quinnipiac 3 at Union 2:  Freshman forward Kelly Babstock netted one goal and added an assist in the first period helping visiting Quinnipiac earn a hard fought 3-2 win over Union at Messa Rink Friday evening.  Quinnipiac improves its overall record to 7-3-1 and its ECAC Hockey record to 2-2, while Union falls to 1-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in ECAC Hockey action.  Quinnipiac's first of three first period goals came just 30 seconds into the contest, as freshman forward Lindsay Burman netted her first career goal.  The Bobcats dominated the Dutchwomen in total shots taken, with a 42-20 advantage.  Quinnipiac goaltender Victoria Vigilanti made 18 saves on the evening.  In her short 3:47 minute outing, Alana Marcinko made five saves while her replacement Kate Gallagher turned away 34 throughout the rest of the contest.
