Weekend Update: Cornell Continues to Roll

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Streaks were extended in the first part of weekend play in ECAC Hockey action yesterday, as Cornell (8-0-0), Rensselaer (2-0-3), and Quinnipiac (3-0-0) each extended its unbeaten streak while posting convincing wins over league opponents Friday.  Defenses were key in all games Friday, with the winning goaltenders only surrendering five totals goals in the five league games played.

At No. 1/1 Cornell 3, St. Lawrence 1:  Rebecca Johnston scored a pair of goals and Laura Fortino scored one and had a pair of assists to lead Cornell to a 3-1 victory over visiting St. Lawrence Friday afternoon at Lynah Rink.  With the victory top-ranked Cornell remains unbeaten in ECAC Hockey play at 7-0, while St. Lawrence falls to 3-3 in league play.  The Big Red got 17 saves from Amanda Mazzotta in the victory.  Junior Josee Belanger scored her first collegiate goal in the contest for the Saints’ lone goal.  Maxie Weisz suffered the loss, but turned in 29 stops.  Neither team was able to score on its power-play tries, with both team's penalty killing units ranked in the top-6 nationally.  St. Lawrence was 0-for-5 with the extra skater while the Big Red was 0-for-3.

At Quinnipiac 4, Brown 0:  Freshman forward Kelly Babstock broke the Quinnipiac single-season goals scored record with her 16th goal of the year, surpassing Hayley McMeekin, who scored 15 goals during the 2006-07 season, as the Bobcats skated to a 4-0 victory over Brown Friday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center.  Sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti made 17 saves on the evening, earning her fifth shutout of the season.  Her counterpart Katie Jamieson turned away 36 shots of her own.  Bethanye Dymarczyk (1g, 1a) and Elena Orlando (2a) each registered multiple points in the win for the Bobcats.  The loss marked the first time in the 2010-11 season, where the Bears were unable to find the back of the net.  Sophomore forward Laurie Jolin led the Bears with four shots on goal.

Yale 2 at Princeton 1:  Both Yale power-play units produced goals and senior goalie Jackee Snikeris made 26 saves as the Bulldogs picked up a 2-1 win at Princeton Friday afternoon.  Yale killed off all three Princeton power-plays, including one with just 49 seconds to play, to seal the win.  Yale scored its goals in the first period as Jackie Raines scored on a redirected centering pass from Jenna Ciotti.  Then Alyssa Zupon had Bray Kethcum's pass ricochet off her foot and get behind Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber to find the back of the net.  Freshman forward Olivia Mucha got the Tigers within a goal 1:07 into the second period, but that is all of the scoring the Tigers could muster.  Princeton outshot Yale 27-8 in the loss, including 11-0 in the final stanza holding Yale without a shot.

Rensselaer 4 at Union 1:  Four different players scored to lead Rensselaer past Union in ECAC Women’s Hockey action Friday at Messa Rink.  With the victory, the Engineers move to 6-7-5 overall and 4-3-0 conference play.  The Dutchwomen slip to 1-12-1 and 0-6-1 in ECAC Hockey.  Linemates Toni Sanders (1g, 1a) and Kristen Jakubowski (1g, 1a) recorded multiple nights for RPI.  In goal, the Engineers saw senior Sonja van der Bliek post 21 saves to pick up her sixth win of the season.  Kate Gallagher made 30 saves in goal for Union.  RPI led in shots 34-22.  Union committed only two penalties in the game while RPI was whistled for four.

At Colgate 5, Clarkson 2:  After spotting the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead after the first stanza, Colgate scored two goals in the second period and another three in the third, to win the game, 5-2 securing its third league victory of the season.  Colgate had three players with two points in the game.  Freshman Rachel Walsh scored two goals while sophomores Jenna Klynstra and Brittany Phillips had one goal and one assist apiece.  Freshman Jocelyn Simpson also scored a goal for the Raiders.  Senior forward Melissa Waldie scored two goals 2:12 apart midway through the opening stanza to give the Golden Knights the early cushion.  Sass made 13 saves for the Raiders while Clarkson's Lauren Dahm recorded 29.
