Cornell & Quinnipiac Stay in National Spotlight
ALBANY, NY – Cornell is once again ranked No. 2/2 in the nation and Quinnipiac comes in at No. 10/10 in the latest women’s national polls released Monday, January 24 and Tuesday, January 25.
Cornell sits at No. 2/2 with 179 points and eight first-place votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll and 140 points and five first-place votes in the USCHO.com poll. The Big Red is coming off a weekend sweep of Colgate and a 3-0 win over No. 4/5 Mercyhurst. Cornell avenged the lone loss for the Big Red on the season, a 4-3 loss to the Lakers back in November at Lynah Rink. Cornell's shutout victory marked the first time that the Lakers had been shutout since falling in the 2009 National Championship game to Wisconsin. The Lakers also hadn't been shut out at home since a 1-0 loss to Minnesota on Oct. 21, 2005.
Cornell is undefeated in ECAC Hockey action at 14-0 and ran its winning streak to 16 games, which is tops in the nation. The Big Red leads the nation in scoring defense (0,76 G/GM); scoring margin (3.67); power-play (26.7%) success rate; penalty kill (97.0%); and winning percentage (.952%). Cornell will host Union and RPI this weekend at Lynah Rink.
After a 1-1 weekend, Quinnipiac remains the No. 10 team in both the USCHO.com Division I Women's Ice Hockey Poll (9 points) and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women’s Poll (14 points). Quinnipiac, which is credited with nine points in this week's poll, has now been recognized with votes in the USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll for seven consecutive weeks, dating back to November 29, 2010. Overall, the Bobcats have received votes in 13 of the 16 weekly polls during the 2010-11 season. The No.10 Bobcats return to the ice this Friday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m., when it hosts ECAC Hockey opponent Clarkson. The following afternoon on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 4 p.m., Quinnipiac will face ECAC Hockey foe St. Lawrence.
Harvard and Princeton each received one vote in the USCHO.com poll.
