Raiders' Season Comes to a Close Against Dartmouth
HANNOVER, N.H. (2/19/11) – Despite coming
close to tying the game with two goals in the second period and a
third in the final period, the Colgate women's hockey team could
not catch up to No. 10 Dartmouth, eventually falling 4-3. The loss
to the Big Green ends the Raiders' 2010-11 season, with Rensselaer
clinching the final spot for the ECAC playoffs that begin next
weekend.
Freshmen Shannon
Doyle, sophomore Jenna
Klynstra and freshman Rachel
Walsh scored a goal each while junior Amanda
Kirwan had two assists in the game. Doyle's goal was the
first of her collegiate career.
Colgate (11-19-3, 8-12-2 ECAC) came out to a productive start,
taking two quick shots to open the game. However, a penalty from
the Raiders at the 1:54 mark allowed Dartmouth to find its
momentum, outshooting Colgate 8-0 over the next four minutes after
it ended. The Big Green then found the net at the 7:28 mark to take
the 1-0 lead. Feeling the pressure, Colgate attempted to stay in
the game as it looked for scoring opportunities but as the clock
wound down, it was Dartmouth that was the more threatening team,
outshooting the Raiders 14-6 in the period.
The second frame began similar to the first with Colgate creating
the first two scoring attempts in the opening minutes. However,
like before, it was the Big Green that found the net at the 3:06
mark and then again just three minutes later, to extend its lead to
3-0 at the 6:16 mark. The Raiders then struck back just over a
minute later with a powerplay goal from Doyle with the help of
sophomore Jessica
Hootz and freshman Jocelyn
Simpson to put the score at 3-1. With newfound energy
from its first goal, Colgate began to attack Dartmouth's net
aggressively as it outshot its opponent 7-3 over the next few
minutes. The Raiders' hard work was soon rewarded when at the 14:45
mark, Klynstra connected with Kirwan to keep to put the score at
3-2. Determined to keep their lead, Dartmouth answered back at the
18:05 mark tp put the score at 4-2, giving them a cushion goal
going into the final 20 minutes of play.
Both teams came out playing aggressively in the final period with
Colgate looking to reduce the scoring margin once again, and the
Big Green looking to maintain its two-goal lead. The Raiders
continued to play hard but despite finding a goal at the 14:16 mark
from Walsh with the assist from Kirwan and senior Jessi
Waters, the team could not find an equalizer, resulting
in a 4-3 loss.
Junior goaltender Kimberly
Sass had 26 saves for Colgate while Dartmouth's Lindsay
Holdcroft had 24.
The Raiders end their season with an 11-19-3 overall record and an
8-12-2 conference record. With the win, No. 10 Dartmouth secured
the third seed in the ECAC playoffs, with Cornell, Harvard and
Princeton taking the first, second and fourth seeds
respectively.
